1991 corolla front wheel bearing

When I purchased this corolla sedan 3spd auto 4AFE I drove it home with a seized brake caliper (about 20km's) which caused the rotor/caliper/hub to take some pretty serious heat... when I got it home I had a doner car and immediately started swapping parts.... The car has been great for 6 months, but I've the thought of a bad wheel bearing has been in the back of my mind the entire time due to the extreme heat the hub endured... The other day I noticed a bit of a growl at speed, and today I was checking the wheels for play and sure enough the driverside front has play (the one exposed to the heat) the rest all feel perfect, no play at all. I assume this means I need a new bearing... these are a pressed in bearing that requires a press to replace correct? Also can you repack and/or tighten these style bearing?

Also, anywhere anyones gotten a good cheap replacement would be great.. toyota's price is like 150 bucks just for the bearing....

thanks for any help and advice... has anyone done a write up on this at all? can you replace the bearings using a brass drift? bearing puller?

cheers
Eric

You can get an axle bearing / hub assembly complete from Rockauto.com for about $140 ... or get the bearing along for about $30 to $50. Yes, the bearing would need to be pressed in if you get just the bearing.

you could just go to a junkyard and get another hub... that would probably be the cheapest and fastest way.

The bearing is pressed in. This requires a press, no way around it.

The autozone website has info on the job.

Find out what bearing is used by visiting websites selling the bearing and listing the actual bearing number. Then do a web search on the part number. On occasion Ebay has bearings listed.

..eage8 is right, the cheapest and easiest would be going to the junkyard. Check to find out what other cars are compatible like the Geo Prizm.

That bearing would be a reasonably priced part. You have to take it all apart anyway. To have it pressed in would cost very little. I wouldn't suggest to you to go try to find a whole new steering knuckle assembly.

What size is the nut in the center of the wheel?

Is this a good deal?

looks like it would still need to be pressed in right?
