Transmission stucj in park

Ok so my uncle owns a 1990 toyota corolla and the transmission now gets stuck in park. I've done soome research but still cant figure out the problem. When you press the brake it does not shift out of park like it suppose to do but but when you push down on that little button, overdrive safetly lock or whatevr the button is it shifts perfectly fine. Im referring to the button infront of the shft stick. Ive check all the fuses and they are all good. Inside the car and in the engine bay all the fuses are good. Anyone have any idea what the problem is pictures would be nice. thank you.

You have to press on the brake pedal to shift the transmission from park into gear, chances are the mechanism that allows you to shift it into gear when you press the brake pedal is broken.

Thats what i was thinking but the car was running perfect transmission was perfect. i understand theres a brake switch mechanism that is suppose to send power to the transmission that allows you to take it out of park. this problem came up after i tried installing a radio so i thought it was a fuse or something but all the fuses are good. when you press the brakes the brake lights turn on and everything.

It is called the shift-interlock-mechanism. The brake light switch sends a signal to a solenoid near the shifter lever that unlocks it. When you press that button you are manually operating the shift-interlock solenoid.

If your brake lights work, the problem is probably the shift-interlock solenoid, or the wire goig to it.

Check for a blown fuse in the fuse box above the driver's left foot. I've replaced a "shift lock mechanism", only to find that it was a blown fuse causing the problem.

Yes in the car and the engine bay. One thing i noticed though is that there is no fuse titled "transmission" where exactly is the fuse for the tranny?

The solenoid should be the only one under the trim panel that goes around the shifter.

There is also a fuse block in the area of the passenger side kick panel that is somewhat hidden. Did you check those fuses too?
