I just found out today mine is starting to shoot craps. On a scale from 1-10 how difficult is this for a beginner to change? I know i have to change the timing belt too. This was told to me by my mechanic thats the issue. Its a low tapping sound down low on the motor. I have a second car so i just parked it tonight. I was thinking of attempting myself because the guy wants 400 bucks to do it and the parts 99.00
I say difficulty would be 6 on a 1 - 10 scale, 10 being hard.
Yea, the timing belt has to be removed so it'll be best to change it. Same with the water pump and timing belt tensioner. The oil pan may have to come off as well.
i helped my mechanic do my timing belt, water pump and seals and for some reason we didn't do the oil pump but he made the job look really easy.
it took about 30 min so i'd say whithout a lift by myself for the first time prob 2-3hours so including oil-pump i'd say closer to 4-5 hours... just because it's your first time.
(also i cant remember but i think we pulled pass. engine mount)
we pulled the alternator belt
water pump pulley
water pump
timing cover
tensioner
timing belt
*at this point you would see if you need to pull oil-pan i think you do...
then oil-pump.(don't forget to prime with petroleum jelly)
now the new oil pump goes back on followed by timing gear then
tensioner and new timing belt
water pump
timing cover 2&3
water pump pulley
alternator belt
you have to remove the oil pan to remove the oil pump..... my ae86 would be on the road if the pan didn't have to come off (the pickup tube bolts to the bottom of the oil pump, inside the pan).

looks pretty good, but you have to take the valve cover off to get the top timing cover off, and you have to take the main pulley off to get the bottom cover off.
(and you should probably replace the valve cover gaskets)
other than that it looks good.

I usually recommend rockauto for parts, they have a nice selection. They have aisin water pumps, but they don't come with the housing... which would probably be annoying.
