the car- 1989 toyota alltrac wagon
the problem- car makes a kind of whirring/whumping/grinding noise when driving. sounds like something that is turning/revolving and rubbing during one part of the revolution. does not track with rpms, but speed. becomes noticeable about 10-15 miles an hour- whumps about every 2 seconds. up from there. 40 mph whumps about 3 or 4 times a second- this is the speed when the sound is worse. 60 mph about 8 times a second- sound is less pronounced at higher speds. sound appears to be coming from the back of the car, but not sure; sometimes it sounds like it comes form underneath the driver. sound is audible to people standing near when the car drives by. drive shaft has been replaced, new fluid in rear end, new fluid in tranny, wheel bearings appear to be fine. on another note, the center lock light stopped coming on and the 4wd does not engage, but AWD still works. related? anyone have any insight into where to troubleshoot? thanks for the help.
A friend of mine had a similar noise when driving her Honda Accord. It turned out to be a loose fender well liner that would flap with the breeze.
I hope yours is something as simple.

I had a similar sound when my half shaft went. I did not notice the tear in my CV boot, and the grease all came out very slowly and on my way home one day, I began to hear a sound similar to that.
I am also thinking wheel or CV or transaxle or propeller shaft.
Check the CV half-shaft on that side of the car, and the transaxle and propeller shaft. The

I have some diagrams for the All-Trac on my Flickr page, but it is not complete -- I am still scanning in diagrams, a slow process.
You can also try Autozone.com and go to the left-hand side link "Repair Info" The repair info here appears to come from both Toyota service manuals and from Chilton/Haynes type shop manuals.

I will put up some more over the next few days.
Is your automatic or manual transmission?
its a manual transmission. we lifted all four wheels off of the ground today and ran it. appears that the noise is coming from the front of the rear differential, where the drive shaft comes into it. sound seems to be starting there and transferring down the drivers side rear axle. and, we discovered, while the car is up in the air anyway, that the center lock IS engaging, the light/transfer indicator switch just stopped working. thanks for the info about autozone repair manuals, i will check them out next. know anywhere to buy a used factory service manual?
My All-Trac is also manual transmission (I wouldn't drive anything else!), and I have found the shop manual invaluable to maintaining the vehicle.

I got mine off of eBay, both the shop manual and the electrical diagram manual. The shop manual does contain electrical diagrams, but the electrical diagram manual is much better. They are not cheap as a pair ($79) but are available on eBay here. These are the 1988 1/2 edition, but I have not found anything more recent, except for maybe the Chilton/Haynes. So far I've found no differences between the description in the manual and what's on and in my 1988 Corolla.

I'll have those pages up by tomorrow morning (Pacific Time). Is this okay? (The shop manual is at my jobsite -- where I do my car maintenance; I don't have a garage where I live so I use the garage at work.)

Another place to get parts info is the website: http://www.toyodiy.com. You go to the link that says "part number database" and enter the year, model, and make of your car. Then there is a web-enhanced pictures of all the parts with their part numbers and prices. The diagrams do show how things fit together. Be aware that part numbers change and prices are out-of-date, but any Toyota dealer can give you the current part # and their price.
Lastly, try an alternative Corolla-only site: Corolland. The "Owner forum" link is toward the bottom of the left-hand column tabs. I've gotten good advice on repairs from these folks as well.

No problem. I've uploaded info on the front axle hub and rear differential. Unfortunately, I've reached my Flickr account upload limit for the month, so unless I upgrade to their Pro account, I won't be able to upload anything else until next month, February.
In the meantime, I'll just keep scanning when I have the time.
