I haven't done a Corolla, but have done a Tercel, and the available space looks about the same. The Tercel manual also says to take them both out together, but I was able to take the tranny out alone.
I believe the Corolla tranny can come off without taking out the engine.
You will need to at least support the engine, and tilt the engine and transmission down so that the transmission can be lowered out under the left side of the car.
You will also need to jack the front of the car up pretty high to clear the tranny.

Modification: Changing something to what you thought it should have been from the start!
Just lift the front end at least 3 feet off the ground and use jackstands on the front lift points (under the front doors). The front center subframes comes out, so you'll need a jack or engine hoist to hold the engine and another for the tranny when you separate the two. Since three of the four engine mount comes off, the entire engine/tranny is able to swivel on the engine mount on the right side. The tranny comes out on the left front, just the tranny.
Now, you can take it out through the top but it will require the engine to come out as well.
If you can't borrow a tranny jack, I highly recomend that you rent one.

I decided to just remove the engine and trans together.
I wanted to change the timing belt and clean up the engine .....looks like maby the lower seal might be leaking...the engine has quit abit of oil gunked up around the middle and lower timing covers.
I bought a car for the donar trans Im putting in. Its a 90 also...the guy threw 2 rods thru the block and pan on a trip Dec 31st. The trans was working fine he told me. 4 new tires.....new belts...reman/water pump on it and the timing belt look pretty new also..(Made in Italy so I know it was not the origional). I diassembled the engine for research,,never been in one of these 4cy Toyota. New Exhaust also.
Im going to put that water pump...and timing belt on my engine....along with the belts...and exhaust on the one im putting the tranny in. Hell they are new enough not to buy new....no sense in wasting money these days.
dropped the subframe also to clean ...simple 20min deal..I was suprised it was so little holding on the whole subframe.
When I changed the clutch on my 89 we propped the front up, removed all mounts except for the engine mount on the passenger side, and had an engine hoist with the one moint holding the engine up. Your engine should have some nice hooks for that. We removed all of the framing and a section of exhaust under there to get to it. Then we got under the car and dropped the transmission onto my brothers chest and then he muscled it onto a piece of cardboard. It worked beautifully since the transmission didn't weigh that much.

!!!!! Your brother must be a strong kid!!!
Hell, I don't weigh much more than the tranny myself, so I let machines do the work for me

my buddy has an s13 240sx with RB26motor and RB25 tranny (sklyline=heavy) and i have wrestled under the sucker on the ground and lifted it up with my chest and held it in place while bolting it up a foot off the ground that had to be at least 100-150lbs...
i've also dropped it onto myself twice and slid out from under the car with it on me (def not comfortable tho)
