When i start my car, down shift, and leave off from a dead stop in 1st gear, my motor shakes and vibrates pretty good. When i am at a stop light, i have to give her a decent amount of throttle for her to take off without the motor shakin bad. Also, when i downshift while cornering, or going straight for that matter, something vibrates and i am pretty sure its my exhaust from the motor shake rattle and rollin all these years.
So, that being said, I am leaning towards my 20 year old corolla needs some new motor and tranny mounts. Has anyone also had these problems and if so did replacing the mounts fix it? Also, anyone have an idea of what it takes to swap the mounts out for new ones? Thanks for any help.
I'm pretty sure at least one of my motor mounts is completely shot. Same symptoms as you describe.
My plan is to try the ricer trick of pulling the mount out and filling it with 3M WindoWeld or I might just try some silicone RTV (which will be softer and transmit less vibration... I'm just not sure how well it will hold up.)
I took a look at my mounts and they don't look all busted up and fallen apart like the ones in those pics do....
I am noticing something else. When i am in gear, and i get the revs to about 4k...and let off the throttle, i hear like a winning noise, its high pitch, and it also does it in between shifts. It sounds kinda like metal on metal vibration...sort of....
Anyone with any ideas on where to start, that would be great. The guy i purchased the car from said it had a new clutch in it, but i dunno. I just hope the engine mounts are shot and the exhaust is whats making the high pitch vibrating noise like i described above from the motor moving excessively.
The two big culprits are going to be your mounts or your clutch. Hopefully it's the mounts. A lot of people have reported that theirs looked fine but were helped by filling them in.
Hard to say about the whining noise. Check to see if it does it in neutral with the clutch out. The exhaust probably wouldn't make a whining noise.
When I first started driving manual my clutch was pretty worn out and when going from stop to start my engine would shake too. But ince I got more practice and replaced the clutch it doesn't do it anymore.
My front engine mount is completely shot. It is a big rubber piece with the outside part completely detached.
I was thinking about doing the DIY engine mount stiffening to it.
Should I NOT do the mod to a completely shot mount?
It would make sense doing the mod on a decently okay mount because it seems like it would work WITH the existing design/rubber.
My concern If I DO do the mod, is that it won't be practical (on a completely shot mount) due to the missing rubber that would usually be present and be doing its normal stiffening job(in conjunction with the adhesive in it's empty voids of course).....pretty much, will a modded SHOT mount be noticeably more floppy/less stiff as opposed to a modded mount that started off in decent condition?
Sorry if this is kinda hard to read. I've been awake for far too long.
I think the mod will work on a shot mount. Give it a try at least. It's easy and cheap. The adhesive filling will be stiffer than the stock rubber so it shouldn't matter too much that the rubber isn't in good shape. As long as you do a good job filling it in, I'm pretty confident it will work.
cool. I'll give it a shot since I've got the adhesive stuff laying around anyways. It couldn't really hurt I guess. The worse that could happen is that it phales and i take it out and replace it with a new replacement. I really should seal up the tail lights while I have the stuff out too. I got a swimming pool in my trunk.
