Installing Cruise Control???

Hey, I'm trying to yank cruise control off a corolla in the junkyard and install it on mine. Ive got a 4a-fe with a 5-speed, 4 door. Has anyone ever done this?? Ive already checked it all out on the junkyard cars and i believe its possible with some hard work but I was wondering if anyone had any advice or had experience doing this before I go ahead with the project. Thanks!

-Phil

I took the cruise control off my RX-7

I think you would just need the motor thing in the engine, and I would take the throttle body too (so it has the connection for the second throttle cable). and you need some way to turn it on... probably just a simple switch.

I'm not sure how it knows what speed to maintain, you would have to look into that, it might need some throttle position signal from the ECU or the TPS or something...

Ah, i see. The VSS or velocity speed sensor is what tells it the currents speed, and unlike the later models, this one controls the throttle at the pedal, not the throttle body as in normally would.. the wiring is a mess and the wires run all the way across the car to the drivers kickpanel...so i may have to dice and splice haha. From what i can see there is an actuator and a vacuum control of some sort, along with a cable that runs all the way into the area where the pedal is.

Well here's the thing, both my Corolla SR5 and GTS models had the cruise wiring all there so it was just a matter of getting the ECU and mechanical parts off a junker. Now my 91 corolla sedan doesn't have the cruise wiring there so it was easier to just install an after market cruise setup then try and retro-fit the stock setup.

First off I'd check to see if by chance the cruise wring is there and just taped up in the harnesses from the factory. If it's there then it's easy to install factory cruise as along as you have a car wit all the parts you can steal from.

You'd need from in cab: Passenger kick panel cruise ECU. Multi switch turn signal/cruise switch setup on steering column, (you'll have to remove the steering wheel to do it). Cruise dash on/off switch. Metal pedal actuator bolted to inside firewall behind gas pedal.

Under hood: Cruise pot with cable that runs through fire wall to that metal pedal actuator. Vacuum lines and vacuum actuator.

Should be it.
