89 Corolla Starter Replace

How hard is it to replace on of these on the 1.6 2 barrel? My friend is sick of turning the key 200 plus times for it to start. Its got the clicking problem?

if it is the starter... it's decently easy to replace, you just undo a few bolts and it comes right out. It's kind of hard to get to it though. I did it twice when I thought mine was gone (it ended up being my timing belt, so I put the old starter back in) and it wasn't too bad.

it also could be his battery cables though...

I found it was pretty easy but a second set of hands is nice to have when putting it back in.

take the intake out out from the throttle body to help access the area. you'll need to get the car on jackstands or a ramp to access the wires before you can get it out.

So the wires have to be undone from the bottom?

yeah, they are at nearly a 90 degree angle towards the ground, under the starter. They are easy to get off.

There's one nut (12mm I think) to remove the 8gauge power supply wire. There's also a small rectangular black clip...This is the wire that sends the signal from the ignition to the starter to engage the solenoid. A screwdriver may be helpful to remove this clip. I think the movable part needs to be depressed. Just be careful not to break it - be gentle.

On the 4AGE you're supposed to take the manifold off to take the starter off, I ended up figuring out that by taking the oil filter off first and then doing the starter was actually easier... not a lot of room in there though and I think I also had to take the fan off.

On the 4AF I assume it should be a lot easier than that.

I don't know my older corollas much, But isn't the stater behind the carb by the firewall?

It might me different on the 4AGE?

yeah, it sounds like the 4AGE is different.

Mine was around where you're referring too.

Once you remove the starter instead of replacing it just replace the solenoid contacts. It's an easy job/fixes the problem and alot cheaper than a new starter. Here's a link on how to replace them on a Tacoma which is the same procedure for Corolla.
