Sunroof won't open . . . any ideas on how to open it manually?

When I bought my Corolla, I specifically wanted a car that had almost manually-operated things: manual shifting/manual transmission, manual windows, manual trunk lock, etc. But the car also came with a sunroof that is electrically-operated and over the past few months it has gotten stuck intermittently in the closed position. Sometimes it opens all the way; other times it does not. When it does stay shut, It actually opens about 1/8" of an inch and then stops. I can hear the motor whirring, so sounds like either an obstruction, or more likely the rails need greasing or the sunroof cables need greasing or replacing. Also, the last time I looked at it when it was open, there was rust on some of the bolts, so they need to be cleaned-up and/or replaced. Unfortunately, with the sunroof closed, I can't get to those things, or even to take the sunroof off. (Not that I need to right now, it's raining outside . . . but it was sunny last week.)

The Toyota shop manual doesn't cover the sunroof in any detail.

Any ideas on how to get the sunroof open?
