They are disconnected on the outboard ends. I have tugged on them but they haven't popped out of the transmission. Do I need to pull harder or crawl under the car and undo something?
they are only held in place by a c-clip... sometimes that clip can get tweaked and the axle doesn't want to come off.... you can generally use a long prybar and pry the axle out... however if you do it against the seal you'll need to replace the seal.

When the spider gear inside my auto tranny went, I didn't know it was that causing drag and metallic noises and clunks. It was either the tran or the axles, as far as I knew. The left CV was a bitch and wouldn't come out whatsoever, prying and all from all sides, smashing it and forcing it like rough sex. It never gave. I gave up and took the auto out and now it's a stick. I opened the diff cover afterwards and had to pry it out from the inside. Oddly enough, the axle was fine! The C-clip was just doing its' job so the axle the don't fly into someones eye when I crash.
I went back and put an edit in but I must have clicked the wrong button
I'm restoring a one owner 88 fx with 114K and it has been parked since 03.
Yeah I forgot about those c clips. It has been a while since I worked on a fwd system. The drivers side pried out easy enough, but the passenger side had limited access. I used a long bar to poke it from the back side. Both came out easier than you would think.
Yeah I noticed the drain plug while it was dripping. Any reccomendations on gearbox fluid type and quantity? I was lucky to find the owners manual in the glovebox but haven't read it yet.
I was doing the driver side ball joint and my axel fell out. I just about cried thinking I messed up my car because I didn't have the money to fix anything that expensive. A quick look at it and I was like wonder if it just slides back in, Viola fixed car
