Have you ever heard of this? v.tranny problem.

today i was driving around, car drove great. then i went to let a buddy out of the car so i threw it in park. after he got out i put it in reverse and nothing changed. no reverse and wheels were locked like it was in park. so i started playing around with it and found that neutral was now 1st. drive 2nd and low gear all works fine but now reverse is a 2nd park and neutral is a 2nd 1st. and also neutral works right when the car is not running but not when it is running.

ive never seen a car do this...im thinking im going to use this as my excuse for a 5 speed swap..

Probably the shifter cable, my old AE82 Nova had that happen after I sold it... then the cable snapped eventually, the guy I sold it to didn't bother fixing it... he drove it for 6months at least so he was happy his $500 went that far.

Yea, it sounds like the shifter cable partially snapped and stretched for ya.

Go 5spd

My sedan does the same thing as mentioned by the OP.
How do I check if the cable partially snapped and stretched? And this is the shift linkage, right?
