you should use your stock head..... otherwise you will have to modify many things.
The 7A-FE should fit right in.
What kinds of modifications do you think will be needed if he keeps the 7A head?
I would suggest getting the complete wiring harness and ECU with it, or loose the facility of the knock sensor. I would also try to get all the accessories, alternator, power steering pump and A/C compressor.

LOL! The one I got looks like the oil has never been changed in that sucker.
I just pulled the pistons out today and the oil rings were stuck in the grooves, carbon deposits everywhere.
I am catching hell trying to get the cam belt pulley off the crank shaft. I am affraid I might heve to cut the sucker off.

hmm... where do I start.... it will bolt in, but....
different injectors, different fuel rail (may need fuel line modification)... no cold start injector (so you have to fab up some weird stuff on the 7a water lines that don't have the location for the thermal switch for the csi and you would also have to fab a location into the manifold for the csi).... different TB's (might have to fab up lines depending on if the 4afe you have has 1 or 2 coolant lines on the tb, as the 7a's have 2)..... motormount may be just a tad different, lower mount is different (for sure)..... would need the 7a exhaust manifold, maybe the downpipe (due to height differences).... tps sensors are not the same (so you would have to figure out how to use the 4afe TB on the 7a anyways) water pumps are different (possible issues) and the rad hoses IIRC are in different locations.
we found out almost all of these issues when a 94 4afe went into an 88 alltrac (except that's even more fun as you have to shave the back of the block to clear the transfercase)

so do need to just compromise and get a beat up 200k 7afe and just buy new acc. for it and cut crank for over-sized bearings? lots of work here i come...
and i've never seen a small port 4age around here thats for sure. i sure could use a head...

You are quite right but, wouldn't most of this be non-issues if he got a complete engine with all the stuff I listed?
I think any engine swap would be best approached with all that stuff in mind. Better yet, get a front clip.
I didn't get the front clip, but they pulled all the wiring, sensors, accessories and ECU for me, and I can go back and get whatever else I might need that was left behind on the donor car.
I'll let you know how mine goes.

There is a small port head with pistons and ECU for sale on E-Bay right now.
I want it but $650 seems a little steep.

how is your 7age swap coming??? i know you had crank issues but otherwise no problems???
I was thinking of just taking an air chisel to the cam belt pulley, but then I found out the price of a new one ($236), so I drilled two holes in it, tapped them and used a gear puller to take it off.
I thought it was rusted in place, but it turned out to be just coked on (cooked oil deposit).
This is how I got the pulley off
This is what the crank shaft looked like with the coke deposit after I got the pulley off. Looks like rust, but is not.
This is what the grunge that I dug out of the water jacket looked like. This is just 1/3 of the total mess. I spilled the rest on the floor.
This freeze plug had been leaking. When I pulled it out I realized how much crap was in the water jacket.

awesome, I'm doing a 7afe swap into an ae92 as well. Just need to find time to do it. The lightweight flywheel & stage 3 clutch are here, I just need to pick them up. Let the games begin
my 7ag is still just sitting on the stand.... I need a crank and a rod.... waiting for a friend to tell me a price on his..... mine ran for 50 miles... guess the $60 I paid for the 200K+ mile block wasn't worth it, lol.
A series are known for the timing pulley to be a PITA to get off... they either slide off by hand or they don't move at all. The way you did it is very common.
If you had destroyed yours I have a spare (as the 7age doesn't use the 7afe lower gear) one lying around that i'd sell off for a few bucks.
yes... 7afe into an ae92 you could use the 7a harness, ecu, etc... but then you have tons of rewiring to do for absolutely no gain. Use the stock head/manifold/sensors/wiring and just put in a $50 HG.... easier, cheaper, and no other modifications needed.
