I just spent last Saturday aligning my trunklid to the car. It was over 1/4" hanging off the back of the car. The trunklid appears to be original as it has the car's VIN on it. Also the bolt locations didn't appear to be changed. I had to take the trunk hinges off and elongate the holes by a little more than a 1/4" for everything to fit nice.
Everything is hunky dory now but I was just curious if anyone else has a trunk fitment like this from the factory.
Yea, mines was made in Japan too. I also noticed on my Japan made pickup that one side of the engine had one brand of spark plug while the other had another brand. Weird huh.
My sedan doesn't have these problems, and I think most all of the sedans are made at NUMMI so I didn't think to ask about them.
All the coupes, wagons and AWD AE9x were made in Japan. Sedans were also made in NUMMI and TMMC (California and Canada) starting in 1988.
Interesting side note: 1990 model year Corolla 25th Anniversary Editions (Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Toyota Canada) were all made in Japan, not Canada.

Same issue here and had to elongate the holes, not sure if it came from the factory that way, can't imagine it would, but I've also had to bend the hing arms a bit to get the back of the lid to sit flush with the body. Maybe the hing arms bend over time a bit and alignment goes out. Not much play to adjust though without elongating the holes somewhat.
Well on my car I think it's because the sheet metal and the frame under nieth have seperated, same issue on the hood, so they both have changed shape a bit. On cars this old things aren't where they were from the factory, not all the same shape, could just be the hinges have warped a bit.
