Intake mod for 4AF carb

Hi All,

I'm in the process of modifying the intake on my 1991 AE92 4AF (carb) corolla. I started to pull the stock system out and came across some mechanism attached to the air filter housing. It appear to be connected to the cooling system (maybe for cold start assistance etc.)

Pic - http://picasaweb.google.com.au/bobth...27342491101970

The question is, can I just remove this and assuming it's part of the cooling line just bridge it out completely to maintain coolant flow. I am working towards a 32/36 weber setup.

Thanks

After further reading I suspect that this may be the Air Suction Valve. Can anyone confirm?

I forget what it's called, but it's definitely not coolant, I thought the same thing (I have a weber 38 that I'm going to install eventually...)

I think it goes into the exhaust side of the valves for some reason and has a check valve up by the intake...

I was just planning on capping it off.

I'll look it up in my FSM for you and let you know it's actual name.

Yeah, it's definately the Air Suction Valve. Apparently it allows fresh air into the intake manifold to assist the cat or something, also purges exhaust back into the intake when the exhaust valves are open.

I took it all of and ran it with nothing covering the hole, sounded like a tractor! :-)

I've now plugged it and all is well.

Until I get the weber on I decided to put an intake on the stock carb. Will keep me going for a few months. :-)

Sounds sweet and goes good. I didn't really do it for a performance increase, just wanted to get rid of the dog ugly stock intake.

I have been trying to do something like that for the longest now...what materials did you use to create that intake? did your car come with an exterior coil or did you customized it...its rare to find 4AF's owners these days. I got the filter to make the intake but failed to find a way to install it. I too want to instal a 32/36 but saving up for it...they are pretty expensive...but yeah please let me know how you did that intake and how does it sound...thank you in advance

I thought '88 was the last year corollas were carburated? A '91 should be fuel injected.

Here in Australia the AE92 Corolla came with a Carb option until 1991 (maybe into 1992). Mine is a CS Limited (carb, A/C, P/S etc.). The F/I version was called the CSi (and others).

The intake was achieved by using the following bits:

1 * 63mm 90degree rubber elbow (attaches to the carb nicely)
1 * 63-75mm (2 1/2" to 3") silicon adaptor - Calibre brand.
1 * Calibre 3" pipe (don't know much more than that)
1 * SCA Pod Filter

All of the bits are from Autobarn and Supercheap Auto (AUS).

Performance wise, not much gain. A little more throttle response.

In answer to the coil question it was like that when I bought it. It's a Bosch unit. Haven't seen a stock 91 AE92 4AF to compare with the factory setup. Mine looks like it came that way from the factory - maybe because it's a late carb version I got lucky,

Carb version is better that F.I. ?? I thought F.I. was better. Or is better..
too many reasons for pro and cons.. F.I. is less maintainance and better gas mileage for the most part. It does appear F.I. maintainance is more expensive when parts go bad.

I have drivin a 1990 sr5. The response difference is definitely noticeable. I like the 4af for how basic everything is, no computer to worry about. No rev limit. I like the carb. Yeah I lose 10 - 15 hp but that is fine with me lol.

lol, if you think your 4af is "basic" wait till you see one with a weber

the instructions basically say "cap off all the vacuum lines that go to the carburetor" lol
