88 FX Tach install ?

I need to connect to the neg side of the coil where-ever that is?

Ive always used the diag port in thet little box thing... Im sure theres other ways, but thats how I normally go about it.

I'm not sure of diagnostic ports location or identifying it.

I did see what looks like and engine control box under the dash? Or did you mean a contact on the distributor somewhere?

What engine is yours? Mine is a 4-AF (Carb) with no tach installed currently, but the diagnostic (ie: RPM reading connector) is a female type plug hanging off the distributor cap. I'd take a picture but it's night at the moment :/

I'll have to take a closer look I've been so focused on the carb issue.

you'll see in the pics it is a 4A-LC.

Since those pics were taken I've had 4 new tires installed. All totaled I've got about $600.oo invested so far. I hope to get it registered and inspected this week.

Neato! Very similar engine to mine at least. I'll try to snap a pic of my distributor test lead when I clean my engine up tomorrow. If you want to look at yours for it, it should be near the little white connector dangling there by the left of your battery in those pictures. Mine has the white connector connected already like yours, and then nearby there is a green one that's very similar that looks to accept a very common auto electronic male connector in its receptacle.

I too am getting mine registered and off the crappy expensive temporary permit tomorrow! Good luck with your safety

This car should fit my needs. I have a long highway commute and I was looking for something cheap that is good on gas. I ride a motorcycle in good weather.

Ahh, another motorcyclist. Yeah, I love two wheeled vehicles. Well, I get pretty amazing mileage from my Corolla. It costs about $30 to fill it up. I really haven't paid that much attention to calculating what the gas mileage is, but I've driven over 100km since I got it, and have just touched over 1/3 tank of gas since I got it (I think around there anyways)

You might like my current two wheeled project. I bought a 1976 moped for fun last summer (gets about 200km to the gallon...lol) and spent all winter making it fast (expansion chamber pipe, 90cc cylinder head in place of the stock 50cc, 16mm carb instead of 14, etc.)

It's quite the fun little ride now!

I used to outrun Puchs on a regular basis. This moped was a Kriedler (sp) the dealer guaranteen 27.5mph out of the box and the speed limit in NJ was 25mph. Hope the pic loads. BTW I got the tach running and I can't seem to get the float height right. It is supposed to be centered in the window <RUNNING> right.

Ah yeah, not too familiar with Kreidlers. I've only owned Italian made mopeds mainly (this ones a Carabela with a Minarelli motor) I like the orange on the Kreidler. Do you still own that? You should put an expansion chamber pipe on it to make it sing

Glad to hear ya got it working. Did your distributor turn out to have the connector on it too, or did you hardwire it to the -ve lead on it?

I don't know what you mean by the float. I still haven't got a tach on this car yet...it's killin' me!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the bikes not a Puch...the seat just had that screen printed on it when I bought the seat (I've since removed the puch logo :P)

That pic was back in the late 70s. The grandparents bought it for us to tool around on when we visited them. I went straight off to college and when I came home it was gone.

Yeah there was an unused connector on the distributer. I have been watching the idle bounce up and down. The float level is way to high and It seems like it is sucking it down and overfilling repeatedly.

Last time I had it running I noticed a few large drops of antifreeze below the center of the radiator. At that point, I got disgusted and put everything away. The weather was turning bad at that time too. I only work in the rain if I HAVE to.
