Question about lights

Hey everybody,

On my 90 Corolla Sedan with Auto, is there supposed to be a bulb that illuminates the shifter? Also I need the specifications on the bulb that lights up the Defogger switch. I have it in my hand but can't. seem to find a spec. so I can replace it. Thanks.

Take the bulb to an autoshop and match it... or ask help from one of the counter guys.

As for the shifter, not sure... but chances are there is one.

For anything but headlights--which are pretty standard--I just go the dealership. Lights in general are
cheap. They should be able to get the part number and part based on your description of which bulb
you're replacing. The only issue I had was they didn't have the coated bulbs, only uncoated--the factory
shifter bulb has a blue plastic coating on it that tints the color. No biggie.

Replacement is straightforward if tedious. Remove the two screws that hold the center console on,
side it off. Then remove the box around the shifter. You may also need to pop the PRNDRL
plastic piece off--I can't remember. Replace the bulb, TEST before reassemblying, and then
you can put stuff back.

You might also make sure your parking brake lever sensor works, lighting the BRAKE light
on the console, since you've already got the patient open.

I strongly recommend keeping this light working, since it's the lowest light in the car, and
clearly visible even on an overcast day when you might be driving with your lights on during
the day. More than once it's saved me from leaving my lights on and running the battery down.

Well got the console apart and there was a bulb. It is a #194 with the blue condom. I ripped the blue condom while removing it from the old bulb so no blue for now. I still have not found any normal parts store with the bulb from my switch. I am about to call the dealer.

Is there any way you can take a picture of the bulb? Maybe someone on here can help...

I know Toyota used some bulbs that were not replaceable with a 'standard bulb' in our cars; take the cigarette lighter illumination bulb for example. It was soldered in and not a standard size. It took me some creativity to replace that one!

if its a 194 i dont see why you cant replace it...if you can take it out im pretty sure you can put a new one in..

The bulb in the shifter was a 194. The bulb in the switches is not. The bulb is 4mm diameter, 12mm high and the base is 10.5mm diameter. I have a couple of pictures but have to figure out how to post them.

just pull the bulb out of the plastic socket. itll be a pain in the ass trying to get it out without breaking it but it can come out, thats what i had to do to my gauge cluster.

Looks like the bulb has its wires pulled through the base to make a contact. I'm pretty sure you can buy them at an auto parts store, if not, then the dealer.

I am just going to take it to the dealer after work. I called one dealer and he said he would have to see it. Autozone and Shucks could not help. I do appreciate all the response. This is a great forum.

I'm pretty sure that #194 is a common bulb you can get at any auto parts store. It looks a lot like the old fashion flashbulbs as I remember.

It's not a 194.
