Has anyone here ever atempted to put a chargecooler on a 4A-GZE?
I've got a gen2 4A-GZE waiting here for a small rebuilt and placement in my Corolla AE92 Hatchback.
I want to ditch the intercooler for a up-grade as I've heard the stock Intercooler has trouble coping with the heat and isn't very efficient.
Now I'm in the very lucky position to be able to obtain a rare Chargecooler (Water to air cooler) from a Celica ST205 GT4.
Anybody ever tried this on a GZE? Results? Difficulties?

it's still an intercooler, even if it's water to air...
also, it should be relatively strait forward, you just need another radiator to cool the water with and a pump to pump the liquid through the system.
actually if you want to get technical it isn't called an intercooler..... an intercooler is a cooler that's meant to go between the intake and exhaust sides of a turbo... used on giant turbo systems (boats, machinery, etc).... I don't remember what the real term is.... but anyways...
the air to water stuff is pretty common.... you can pick up a universal A2W cooler on ebay for around $100.

Well, whatever it is called. I'm going with the Toyota system as it excists on the Celica GT4.
It's a complete system I can buy complete with the cooler itself, the waterpump, the radiator en the electrics etc. So won't be needing part, apart from some tubing, but that wont be a problem either.
But nobody ever tried it?

it'll be custom into your car.... should be relatively straight forward...... I know the st185's don't run the a2w pump constantly, but many 185 owners have modified it to run full time....

Corky bells maximum boost book discusses A2W coolers pretty thorougly.
As for the pump, you can use an electric circulation pump used on mercedes cooling systems. Shouldnt cost more than like 30 bucks. Wire it up to a fan thermostatic switch and put that fan switch into the water cavity of the cooler core. That way when the water heats up, it will automatically start to circulate into the front core, for example.
The front core doesnt have to be very big an oil cooler of medium size would work just great. Also since you get pretty cool temps in netherlands during winter and to inhibit corrosion a 50/50 coolant water mix is needed.
For what I understand is that in the Celica it is wiried up to always run on 30% capacity to keep things flowing, and 100% capacity under boost.
In my opinion. When the water is starting to heat up, you're already to late. I'll try and keep the water cool all the time, since these GZE's tend to run very hot.

any supercharger setup is going to run hot..... which is why Toyota used an IC wheras most s/c setups don't.
The gze in an MR2 does tend to run hot, especially with an n/a engine lid... but nothing that's too concerning. I noticed about a 20* intake temp change just by adding a fan and cutting a hole in my n/a lid....
I would assume that a FWD that has a proper scoop wouldn't have these problems.
