I say fab your own wooden rear deck for 6x9's and carpet it up!
Once it's done, it's done...and you have very nice 'stock replacement speakers'...I say that because 6x9's have 3 speaker elements to them - Woofer, Mid and Tweeter, so if it's all you're going to have for a while, it's the best sounding option.
I'm no car audio expert, but I am a musician and an audiophile at heart, and know good sound when I hear it. I may not be able to afford $1000's in equipment at once, but I spend probably most of my day with music in my ears.
5 1/4" speakers are okay at best on their own. They're kind of a middle ground between component speakers (ie: a system where each speaker serves its own purpose - tweeters, subs, mid range speakers) and full range 6x9's. They will not have as much bass as a 6x9, and typically lose much low end clarity at high volumes.
What kind of music do you listen to? Although I guess it's not really that much of a concern if you're on a tight budget for now - it will tell you if you're a likely candidate for sub addiction down the road
It's certainly up to you which you prefer, but if you're going to be sticking with a subless system for now or forever, I would seriously consider 6x9's over 5 1/4"s - no matter what type of music you listen to, the 6x9's are going to provide a better dynamic range and quality to your music.
5 1/4"s make great speakers if you're doing a 4 speaker 'super stock' system in the front, with 6x9's in the back. Or you could even go as low as some 2 way 4" speakers in the front (I believe these fit in most 'rollas old speaker places if you got em)
Anyways enough of the speaker nazi talk...
If you want the best bang for your buck, go with Alpine. They make absolutely marvelous mid level and high end speakers. This is the way Alpines current setup works:
'Type S' - Entry level audio
'Type R' - High quality enthusiast audio
'Type X' - Extreme audiophile 'competition' gear
There's also JL Audio which I have heard is really good, but if you're going for the 'Type R' series from Alpine, I wouldn't expect to hear much difference for the cash your going to pay for the JL's instead.(Yes, it's ricer sounding...but these things are soooo damn good!)
You can compare Type S and R features by looking at the different products whereever you want to buy stuff. I would shell out the extra cash for the Type R 6x9's personally. They are much better.
For a good idea of what these speakers are like, I had 2 6x9's in my rear all on their own being driven by the Sony deck. The bass was enough to make the rear view mirror vibrate, and they wouldn't distort at 20w RMS or w.e the deck pumps out. You could add an amp in the future and never have them distort even at ear destroying volumes if your gain is set right.
I listen to a mix of everything - David Bowie, EBM/Aggrotech (Harsh electronic - lots of harmonics), Drum and Bass, TASTEFUL rap (Old skool!), The Cure, The Cranberries, Synth Pop, Warp Brothers, Electro funk, you name it...
Everything from David Bowies guitar to the plucking harmonic arpeggios in a melodic electronic song were crystal clear and music to my ears. They are amazing at low volumes, as well as loud enough to annoy people in the car beside you. Make no mistake, Alpine makes incredible audio equipment.
Oh, did I mention I have the Type S? Not the Type R? lol. I was going to grab the Type R, but a buddy of mine sold me the Type S for $50. So that was quite the steal!
Whatever you do, don't buy anything but Alpine or another high quality brand. Believe me...paying twice as much for quality gear will make you happier in the long run if you have any care about the sound of your setup
