4AF'in lag

So I got this problem, well not really a problem, but it's pissing me off. Anyway I drive an '89 5 speed 'rolla with a 4AF. My issue with it is that it takes forever for the damned thing to move. I did a full tune-up, added an oil catch can, and replaced the resonator with a pipe. It should be faster! Even just the tiniest bit, but it's not. It takes me forever to get up to say 30 or 40 and then it will decide to either puts along or haul ass. The only possible problem I can think of is a while back(before the tuneup), I had to turn the idle speed up alot to keep the car running when I had practically no spark (crunchy distributer contacts). I turned i t back down later, but maybe too low. Any ideas? I really don't expect this car to knock my head back into the seat, but It does frazzle me so when an old-broken dodge minivan driven by yogi bear flies past me at a light without any effort. Sorry 'bout the rant. Thanks in advance.

AE92

Check your vacuum lines and timing. Sounds like your timing is late.

While checking all the vac lines for leaks be sure to check the vac lines at distributor vac advance unit for leaks. Also check the centrifical advance weights inside the distrib for binding. Take the cap off and turn the distributor rotor clockwise . When you release it should spring back. If not the weights are sticking and need lubed or one of the springs is broken. Will have to consult a manual for the teardown procedure. As mentioned before you aren't gonna get whiplash from the power of this engine but it shouldn't be that pokey either.
