Or air in them...was there any work done on the brakes recently?

Probably a hydraulic problem.

air would make them feel spongy, but he lost them totally, which means a rupture in the hydraulic circuit.

Well, that should be easy enough to check.
Just look in the wheel wells at the flexible lines. Those are probably the first to go.

cEtnA, did you have a chance to check the fluid level? Curious what you found...

If you attempt to use the brakes several times when there's no fluid ... you may need to change the master. This piece does not run empty...

...maybe the wheel cylinders are rusted and dirty and not working as they should. I swapped out my wheel cylinders when I just did my brakes...I am about to swap out the master cylinder and replace the brake lines with braided.

ima thread jack a bit cause im having issues as well...

Over the winter i had removed K-member/engine & removed only the 2 front brake lines...
The fluid ran dry (yes my mistake) went to put everything back together an thought i would replace my master cyl since id have to bench bleed it again anyways (an i want my brakes in tip top condition so new parts are allways nice) i then buttoned everything up an i have a very spongy pedal, thinkin i had air i gravity bled/pressure bled the system for along time (long story short ive ran about 2 jugs through) & still no brakes !! i can get them to barely lock up but i have to put 100lbs of effort into pushen the pedal down...

so to break it down...

i have new rubber lines in front (possible they were damaged on ground but i dont think so)
new rear caliper
new master cyl
ive taken apart all 4 corners, cleaned & re lubed the slided !

OEM booster & proportioning valve..

No fluid leaks !!! but im guessing its getting air somewhere..

my guess would be the booster is bad or out of adjustment ?

ive given up an car is going into toyota on friday since i dont have time to mess with it before my next event.. but curious what you guys think..

Brake booster failure wont leak out fluid, not will it cause brakes to disappear. Broken booster will make brakes very hard though, as you have no assist on them.

Gravity bleeding seldom works, air it with a friend.

I had a similar issue. Replacing the wheel cylinders fixed it.

Check for a bad/loose wheel bearing.
If you have a wheel that is wobbling because of a loose bearing, it will push the piston further into the caliped/cylinder than is normal. This will require extra pumping to get the brakes to work.

This happened to my son's civic a few months ago.
