Carb air intake

So as some of you may know, I've been playing with a few intake ideas. Everything I want to possibly do involves removing my frying pan so I need to know what to do with all the vacuum line. What do I cap off and what do I re-rout or whatever the case may be? (eventually I'll get a weber, but in the meantime...)

The vacuum line going to the valve cover can be replaced with a breather (as far as I know)...kinda like those ones tuners put on their valve covers.

Or, there are 'universal' cold air intake kits on ebay. They come with an L shaped pipe that has a nipple on it for connecting the vacuum line to the valve cover.

It's up to you which way you go...I have no idea what sort of difference it makes to be honest.

EDIT: here ya go..

air intake with attachments for breather line: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Universal-Cold-Ai...lenotsupported

air breather if you choose to not go the route of keeping the line: http://cgi.ebay.ca/2-Air-Breather-Fi...lenotsupported

Oh yeah, and besides the improvement of a bit more throttle response...if you want to actually gain performance, run the piping to under your grill with a duct box or something so that it gets force fed cold air when you're driving. Sure, it will look cool and make lotsa noise without doing that but it won't really do much for performance I would think.

Thanks alot, that's really very helpful. The ram-air thing is a good idea, but my roommate has a trick he's used before involving an air pump from a marine engine that'll force air pretty quickly apparently. It's 12 volt so I can put it on a switch. I don't know much more about it than that, but I'm going to play around with that idea for a while. My only concern at this point is running lean...I should be able to figure it out. Thanks again!

Cool idea! I love homebrew stuff...my brain lives on it

I would have to agree with you that running lean might be a concern. Also, if you're running the stock carb I hear that it's nearly impossible to find any different jets for it...

Though of course you can always drill your own jets! Just get the right sized thumbscrews that fit in the jet hole and drill your own jets

you can make a ram-jet air-intake,, also known as a scoop,, the force of the air when you get over a certain speed with the car forces the air into the intake. Not sure how will work with these low horsepower engines, if it would work at all. But maybe someone has tried this. It would virtually give no perfomance while under a few MPH/KPH. Not sure how fast you would need to go, nor am I sure how big this scoop must be.

Those marine air pumps are meant for cooling the engine compartment, not intake and they dont move enough air. Only way to get more air in an engine to give power is either, turbocharging, supercharging or pulsecharging.

As for a hood scoop, they dont work as far as intakes go.
