weber install... not going to plan

Ok, so I tried to install my weber 38 the other day on my SR5 (4AF)... and it didn't go quite according to plan

I was posting in the 4AF intake mod thread, but I decided to make my own thread and stop jacking that one

other thread: Intake mod for 4AF carb

Ok, so to bring everyone up to speed, I installed my weber and now my car won't start. It has spark, and I pulled the plugs and they were dry... so there is a fuel problem.

I just tried to spray starting fluid in it and it'll start for a little bit and then die. One time it started and ran for probably 30 seconds and then eventually started knocking pretty bad and then died again... I tried turning the mixture screws out more, but it didn't really help any.

when it ran for 30 seconds I had just changed my FPR to 5.5 psi instead of 2... to see if that was a problem, I'm not sure if that's why it ran so long though.

why would it be knocking so bad? and why won't it stay running?

Is it possible I got a bad carb?

So I finally got it running and drove the 3 miles to work today

my FPR is at 5.5 psi and the mixture screws are at 4 turns... I think something is wrong :-P. I think I might call weber up soon.

it's also idling at 2500...

What I think "might" be the problem is that you need a fuel pump that can properly supply the Weber...or you do not have jets that are properly sized for the 4AF. There are others out here that are much smarter than I...they will know.

yeah, I've been emailing back and forth with weber (they actually have really good support). The current ideas of what might be wrong are either:

1) linkage binding
2) big vacuum leak
3) fuel obstruction

I haven't had time to mess with it though since I talked to them.

right now, it barely runs lol, so not very well... But according to the weber guy it "should feel like a 2.0L or a small v6" lol and have twice the torque increase as the 32/36 so we'll see...

I'm tempted to borrow the wideband from my rx7 to see what it's doing later, but right now I don't need a wideband to tell me it's pig rich.

yay! I got it to work right.

there were 2 problems.

a) there was a small vacuum leak that fixed itself when I took off the carb and put it back on friday night.

b) I had a faulty fuel pressure regulator (lame), I went and got a slightly nicer one that looks exactly the same but is a mr. gasket one instead of a spectre one. It has metal fittings instead of plastic ones

so it runs pretty well now, but it made my car sound like a civic

I'll write a full right up later, maybe tomorrow, that tells you where to run vacuum lines and such.
