cv joint or tranny problem?

Last week, I was pulling out of the school parking lot after my last exam and I heard a clunk a little louder than usual when I took my corner and then all of a sudden I heard what sounded like metal scraping coming off my passenger side wheel. The car would not drive so I figured I had finally busted my CV joint. I knew they were bad and I had bought new ones just never got around to changing them. I got the car pulled home and over the weekend I was able to change them. The car drove about 35miles on the new CV axles just fine. Sunday morning, I made it probably 1.5 miles down the road and the joint gave out again. There was no clunk it, the car just kept revving whenever my foot was on the gas pedal. I pulled over and hitched a ride to work and picked the car up later at night. I haven't gotten a chance to look at the car yet but did I do something wrong on the install the first time or is my transmission just that bad?

Did you notice any gear oil coming out or anything like that?

The first thing I would do, is get in there and look everything over, and see if there is anything visually noticeable. If not I would pop out the axle and check the splines on the axle, to see if they are damaged at all, and look at the oil to see if there is metal fragments in it. I am pretty new to this stuff, but just from a position of common sense, that is probably where I would start.

The axle probably was not pushed in far enough to have the spring clip engage and the axle slipped out far enough so that the splines on the axle and the splines in the transmissin were no longer engaged.

An update:
My dad re installed the joint so I didn't get a chance to check it out, probably the mistake right there. Drove the car another 35 or so miles today and it gave out again. The car's sitting in the parking lot waiting to get towed tonight. Could it be anything to do with the differential? My dad argues with me that the car has no separate drain for the differential but the 3spd does in fact. Any ideas?

The differential for the 3 speed auto has a separate drain and refill plug.
