Engine Oil Pan Bolt Torque
I noticed some weirdness between the factory manual and the Haynes manual for my '88 4AF
with regard to the oil pan bolt torque.
The factory manual says the torque is 43 in-lbs, just like the tranny pan bolts. However, the
Haynes manual says that it is 90 in-lbs (for the 4AF) and 48 in-lbs for the 4A-C/4A-GE.
OK, first of all, I thought the 4AF(E) and 4A-GE had the same cylinder block, and only
differed in the cylinder head, which should mean the pan bolts are the same. The 48 in-lb
figure looks like a typo or misread of 43, but the 90 is just way, way off.
Anyone sort these numbers out before? Is the block aluminum? If so, I can understand it
should have the same torque as the tranny pan (tranny body is aluminum). If not, seems like
torque should be higher. I am high on crack for even questioning the factory manual?
