thinking it might have something to do with the throttle system. as if it were being choked some how. case is, car wont turn over. if it does, the rpms dont reach above 1000 at the idle. when i apply gas, the engine starts choking out. if im flooring it, the car will usually hang at about 2 grand for a minute, then, it might work its self through to higher rpms. i dont know if its an air issue or gas issue. i know that you can smell the gas extremely well after trying to make it reach higher rpms. i can give a better description with more specific questions. this is my first import tuner and i know the AE92 is a gem in the tuner world. its a 91 Corolla GT-S with the "red head" 16 valve. any help with this situation is greaty appreciated. im very dedicated to this car and only want to help it meet its excellent potential.
"Turn over" or "cranking" means the starter is turning the engine.
Are you saying that your car cranks over slowly, and then starts and idles at 1000RPM?
Cranking slowly, could mean a weak battery, or weak starter.
1000RPM at idle is about normal, maybe a little high.
If it boggs (chokes out) when you give it gas, it could be gummed up injectors, bad throttle position sensor, bad air flow meter, or just bad gas.
Has the car been sitting for a long time and not run?
Is the gas in it old?
Is the area around the injectors wet with gasoline?

You really should have explained that the AE92 was not a gem in the tuner world. The AE86 was.

You need the following things for the car to run: air, fuel, spark.
Air is never the problem in these cases for obvious reasons.
You said you can smell gas and it gets more noticeable when you've been giving it a lot of throttle. Assuming there's no huge fuel leak, it sounds like you're injecting fuel but it's not burning.
That leaves spark. You need two things in this regard: the physical spark and proper timing. What condition are your spark plugs? Pull them out, clean them, and check the gap on them. That might be the entirety of your problem. The problem could also be in the distributor or the spark plug wires. Also make sure a spark jumps from the wires to the head from 1/16" away. To check the timing, you'll need a timing light ($10 and up from the store). I'm guessing the 4AGE stock timing is 10 BTDC but you'll want to double check that.
Yeah, im agreeing with Ghostyman, but we need a bit more information to really figure out, like above the guy was asking how long the cars been sitting, and whether or not this just happened out of nowhere and it was running fine before, or whatever. Helps a lot!
open the intake, maybe the filter's really dirty? that happened to me the first day i had this car with only 28,500 miles on it. (mines a 1990 DX EFI) i would start it, then it would run kinda choppy and when i hit the gas it would "bog" out. i opened the intake box and that w3as the proble right there. if not, check everything that would be "tuned up" like plugs, wires, filters, sounds like some sort of vacuum or intake problem. try intake cleaner
