Hey im about to do a transmission flush on my AE92 GTS when i change my cv axles. the Haynes manual recomends API GL-5 75w90 or 80w90 and i bought some NAPA 80w90 non snthetic gear oil(i think its made by valvoline) which is apparently rated for GL-3/4/5. Just wondering if this will work fine or if i should return it and get something else. Thanks
When I bought my car it had hard shifting in to 2nd and 3rd. I changed the fluid out for Redline MT90 and it smoothed it out just fine. It may be a bit more expensive, but worth it in my opinion. You won't feel the difference right away, but overtime it will work it's way through the tranny and start to feel better.
I sometimes have trouble with 2nd and 3rd too but im just hoping a tranny flush will help since i just bought the car recently and dont know when it was last changed. It cost me about $16 for 3 litres of the 80w90. about how much would redline cost?
I have a bottle of Redline MT90 sitting next to me that was $11.95/qt. I use it in my MR2 but will just use whatever's cheapest when I change the AE92 fluid. My transmission is very smooth and the fluid in it is at least 50k old.

I just put some Redline MT90 in my RX7 when I changed the clutch, I didn't really notice a big difference, second still grinds really bad at full load
I bought it from OGracing.com for $8.95/qt.
I put Mobile1 in my corolla when I changed the axles and it was a crap load better than the garbage the mechanic put in there when he changed my clutch. Very noticeable as far as smooth shifting goes.
Mobile1 isn't as extreme as royal purple or redline, but it's also like $5 a qt. or something? I recommend that unless you're going to be tracking your car.

well, I just filled it with the NAPA stuff, and it seems pretty bad so far. Worse than whatever the previous owner of the car used in the transmission. Shifts are more notchy now, and the whole car just seems to vibrate more. Maybe its bad because its non synthetic? Gonna go see how much redline will cost here tomorrow.
Actually, i have another question. I think i overfilled the transmission just a bit because i filled it with only the front of the car jacked up. It was leaking last night from where the axle connects to the transmission(differential oil seal i think) but now its not leaking anymore. Do you think i should replace the seal? or just drain the fluid to the proper level and just leave it at that. I really dont feel like taking out my axles again.

a leaky gasket never gets better or fixes itself..

I have an AE 92 as well, but a SR5. I have a leak too somewhere and about every month or month and a half, I refill it with Walmart's Supertech API GL-5 nonsythetic 80W-90. It works and no problems so far and I have done this for the last 2 years. Shifting is smooth but I can not compare with Royal Purple and Redline how much more smoother since I have never tried those brands. However, for the price, its a real bargain since its only $11.88 for 1 gallon (which comes out to 2.97/qt)!!
Royal Purple and Redline is really quality stuff and I would recommend putting that in just because its much better for the transmission. But cuz of the leak, its not worth it for me to refill that. Transmission gear oil is something you change once in a blue moon compared with motor oil since it doesnt degrade as fast. Mind as well and put in some quality oil and still wont break the bank~ Your NAPA 80W-90 should be good to go too~
As for your leak, if its not leaking anymore you should be fine. No need to drain anymore cuz as you said, some leaked out anyways so you should now be at the proper level. I doubt you need to replace any seals or gasket. But you should keep on checking under your car each time you finish driving. Replace the seal if it continues to leak after each drive. I notice as for me, the leaks only happen when the car is driven and when I leave the car sitting for a week, theres no leak.
If you do replace the seal, can you let me know how much it cost for the whole job?? I seriously need that replace sooner or later but I dont want to spend alot of $. =I
Well, i did everything myself and it cost about $110 per axle. $15 for the seal. but its pretty hard/impossible to do it yourself if you dont have the right tools. The seal itself was really hard to get in, and im still unsure if its fully seated but its really tight so im assuming it is. Took me 3 days to finish the job, but thats becase i ran into every possible problem along the way. If its your daily driver or you jsut dont like slaving under your car for days, id suggest bringing it to a shop. labour will probbaly be around $200-$400.
After fixing the seal, i switched the redline mt90, and although the difference isnt huge i think it was worth it. Atleast now my whole car wont rattle when i floor it a bit. Thanks for the recomendation.
