Gen6 Subwoofer Location....

Not sure if this is the correct forum, move if need be. Thanks.

Im thinking of taking my 2 12" MTX's out of the box and mounting them in a piece of MDF cut to fit into the passthrough behind the back seats...I want to seal around it and try and seal the deck as much as possible. do you think this is a good idea? the logic behind my reasoning is I can use the whole trunk as my box. im planning on rubber spraying the trunk and finding all the rattles so there will be as little ambient noise as possible.

on a related note, im trying to cut a 6x9 hole in the middle of the deck...any suggestions? i was thinking a jig saw would work, but the rear window prevents me from getting anything bigger than my hand @ that angle to cut.

thanks!

Honestly, it all sounds like a bad idea to me. First of all you can't just use any subwoofers in an open air space like that and expect good results. I guarantee they will sound much better in a 3/4in MDF box. What type of box you use (sealed/vented/bandpass) that's up to you, all will have different results obviously. Using Free-Air subs is a whole different thing then you probably think, you'd basically be using your rear deck to hold the subs, and the trunk as the box. Here's a picture I found...
If done right it can work well, but remember you'd have to basically seal off the whole trunk, except for where the trunk lid opens and closes for it to work right. It's just so much easier to use a box with subs in the trunk. :-p

And dont cut your rear deck all to hell :-| There's no going back, remember that lol. In my opinion you'd be better off using your rear deck speaker panel as a cutout shape and just make a new one out of like 1/4in wood of some sort, and cutting two 6x9 holes where the original 5.25 were. As long as the 6x9's aren't giant it should prob be doable. That's basically what I'm going to do, except I'm getting 6.5's. 6x9's alone in the rear deck if done right could actually give you a real good amount of mid bass.

But anyway, good luck with whatever you choose, hope that helped.

I'd say just go with the box, those are created to work withe speakers and give a good bass response, the trunk wouldn't give nearly the same sound. speakers not used for bass can be open like that, but low end requires a tuned box, at least to a certain extent. Trust me, I've experimented with building bass cabs(for a bass guitar) and little changes can make drastic differences

yea, i came to that conclusion this morning...i wasnt planning on putting them there though, rather where the seat backs are...in the pic, id put them in a piece of MDF cut to fit the opening that's behind the seatbacks in the back seats. BUT, it wouldnt be right, even if i seal the entire trunk, deck and all, the bass would eff the speakers up IN the deck...im thinking, anyways lol

im just going to build another box, my subs arent hitting @ the same time, because of all the holes and cracks in the box. there have been many an amp screwed into this ol' box lol

If your subs aren't hitting at the same time it's usually because you may have Positive/Negative backwards on one of the subs. Or if your amplifier has the phase 180 degree control turn it to 0. But yeah if you're using a sealed box, definitely make sure it's fully sealed lol.
