I've owned 2 ae92s and both had rusted out sunroofs... i know its a common problem and sometimes the sunroof doesnt even work. other then just replacing it with another piece that would probably rust out sooner or later are there any other options? could i possibly get a glasss sunroof off another car that would fit? would anyone recommend any aftermarket glasses? also my sunroof wont retract... the motor spins and the cable isnt snapped because i can retract it manually.
Got the same problem and wondering the same thing. Guess it would help to figure out why they rust out as they do and find a way to prevent it from happening...

probably made from a different material that rusts easily... ive found one alternative but its kind of pricey http://www.shop.retro-spec.net/produ...&productId=110
found it over at club4ag.
the carbon fibre looks amazing but im only looking to spend 100 dollars on it. planning to swap my smallport out into an aw11 in the distant future so i dont really want to spend too much money on a body im not keeping

My observation is that it rusts because the weatherstripping attaches to a downward facing flange with a u-channel friction fit. Water gets in, it always will, and it has nowhere to go. The metal then begins rusting and so goes the rusty sunroof. Keep in mind this is not the seal between the main roof and the rubber, but the sunroof panel and the rubber. I've fixed my sunroof by blasting all the rust away, painting with "rustproof" paint and then filling the interface between the sunroof and weatherstrip with weatherstrip sealer. We'll see how long this lasts. If not for long, then I'll probably go with a fiberglass unit from fazzt73.

While the CF looks nice and the fiberglass would be great.....
I have another problem, my sunroof panel is mostly rust free i think some surface rust on the inside but that's it. Its a power sunroof and I'm tall so headroom is not good when I have a helmet on... I'm looking for an alternate idea to lose some of my cars weight, gain head room, and still have a removable panel... while I might decide against removable panel since I think it would be trouble anyways but I enjoy my sunroof very much on warm days but I could survive without I'm sure. I've survived with no a/c or heater after all.
I was thinking maybe rivet a panel over the sunroof hole and remove the mechanism but I don't want to put holes in my roof but this is more favorable over welding a big panel in. I don't want to weld in a panel because I don't want to risk warping the roof which would easily happen on a large flatish surface.
I love the look of the C/F one and have one on order from Fazzt73. Can't wait to get it!
Where's the best place to get a new sunroof rubber seal???
If it is the same OEM rubber seal that is used by all the AE92s, then the Toyota part number is
63251-12062. You can then order these items through a dealership or an online parts company like www.parts.com.
Canadian92 i have the exact same problem & i tried gaining extra room when i mounted my new seats lol but the padding in the seats took up all the extra room so im sitting in the same place haha when i wear a helmet i have to tilt my head slightly to have it in the sunroof hole a bit i too thought about removing the sun roof but i love mine too much an you also gotta think how much struture your going to loose by removing it

But will you really gain any headroom without removing the headliner and the sunroof tray?
My helmet problem is with my headrest. I have to recline the seat a little more than normal when I run autocross.

Modification: Changing something to what you thought it should have been from the start!
I have the roof lining removed but I want to remove the sunroof tray and power mechanism majiggy I figure it is a good inch or two of head room. I think I want to keep the sunroof itself but not the mechanism(weighs a shit tone and screws your headroom). Pretty much I'm talking about removing pretty much all the extra shit hanging off the roof. Or what amount of it gives me good headroom and reduced weight without sacrificing structural integrity...
I have my seat reclined for more head room but I still have my head cocked to the side because the sunroof panel area sits a bit higher...
I'm not in a rush to do it as I still have to set up a custom mounted seat and roll bars... before I worry about that.
