7AGTE Build w/ Pics

Well the long awaited day is finally upon us!!!

for those of you who don't know i've been boosted @8psi since January on a 91' 4AFE stock internals/electronics. 165whp has been a real blast on such a light car but i'm startin to get worried about how long this will actually last...

as with any turbocharged car certain things like burning oil/faster ring wear concern me since my motor had 150xxx before boosting. the motor runs perfectly but i don't want to ruin a perfectly good motor just because i have no tune and everything is Original from 91...

SO...
i've been waiting and waiting... finally found a guy on craigslist in Orlando who allegedly bought this motor in 2001 for his Paseo but found out it wouldn't fit.
supposedly it sat in his garage for the last few years and has around 70,000 miles
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this is where I need everybodies advice...

i currently have a more/less complete Large-port head from 87' MR2 but it looks like the cam saddles need to be honed/polished prob cams too...

so... either i get a *rebuilt head from a big company and trade as core for like 350

OR... try to find a decent shop in FL that can line-hone my head and poss. bore/hone and hot-tank block which i would need anyway...

Critizise please
*I plan to MS this Beast because it's the most cost-effective way to control fuel/air
*i've found engine kits online and some look decent but i don't know the brand of gasket kit they use and i'm not buying felpro shit... so i need help here...
*my goal is 200- closer to 250 whp since the crank is forged can i get away with stock con-rods and GZE pistons or do i need forged everything to be safe??? i won't be revving too high...
*this car has always been on a serious budget but i'm not willing to sacrifice quality (why it's taken so long) I've already converted completely to GTS spec and some. now i'm working out all the little bugs...
__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________

*do i need forged rods and pistons or can i squeeze by with GZE pistons and stock rods...
*what mod to i need to do to tail of waterpump to work with "G" head...
*does anybody know where to get a complete engine kit with decent brands?
otherwise
Cometic HG 1.5mm or 2mm copper
ARP flywheel bolts, head studs, main studs
GZE pistons US (unless somebody know where to get jdm gze pistons)

i'm so happy ill take some pics of what i've got so far i still have to tear out the old tired 4afte...

update the rods and get studs....

my 7a just ate another bearing (i'm done with it... 3 times is two too many) even though it has 80psi oil pressure at idle when cold (i know, makes no sense).... I think it has to do with the stock conrod bolts stretching at high rpm (my MS was set at 8200, I think)

get a 4age water pump, bolts on fine.

Hey jmaz not sure what exactly you are looking for as far as cylinder head goes but a friend of mine bailed on his 16v project in favour of a 20v so his head he had gone over is for sale.

I will have to double check what exactly he had done but I'm pretty sure it has been cut 5 thou nice and straight, mild port and clean up, flow matched (will have to get the numbers), 5 angle valve job, blueprinted, re-shimmed there might be more I'll have to double check if you are interested. The head came from a 1989 gts (bigport) with 200k it still has the stock cams in it, also has stock intake manifold cleaned up. This head was built by a very knowledgeable 4ag speciaist and was not cheap. My friend wants $500can for it but make a resonable offer and he might go for it.

Here's the guys shop that did the work.

you can use the stock 7a MLS HG..... the rest I had in a kit that came with a car I traded.....

gze pistons are 20mm pin, yes.... 7a's are press fit and 4a's are full floating -- have the 4a pistons press fitted onto the 7a rods

you will NEED adjustable timing gears

I don't know why there would be a variance in 7a oil pumps.... mine was a 93 with a knock sensor..... I think you could pick up a new pump without the sensor built in, as your ae92 won't utilize the sensor....

There are two 7A oil pumps. One with the crank sensor (newer) and one without (older).
There is a distributorless 7A and one with a distributor.

Mine ('95 Corolla)has the distributor, and the crank sensor.

I have seen it recommended that the 4A-GE pump be used, I think for the timing mark on the crank pulley for the timing belt.

There is a company in Australia called Spool, that makes rods for the 7A, and they come with ARP bolts, I think. Shipped to the US I think the total price was U$500. They post on E-Bay occasionally.

i've heard of them but out of the three i'd probably put them 3rd. ill have to see what kind of hardware the belfab units come with

thanks again! so a large-port oil-pump will work nicely? this is the kit i was looking into:

7AFE
Complete Gasket Set
Copper Head Gasket
ROSS/Wiseco Forged Pistons
(81, 81.5, 82, 82.5mm bore) and
(any comp ratio)
Performance Rings
Performance Wrist Pins
TOGA HP Main Bearings
TOGA HP Rod Bearings
Timing Belt
Freeze Plugs
Thrust Washers

EKTO29MPX
$889
----------------------------------------
Following Kit w/TOGA HV Oil Pump
EKTO29MPXG
$999 (specify sensor/no sensor)
http://www.importperformanceparts.net/

they offer pauter rods at slight discount with engine kits...

be aware that the kit you list shows 7afe pistons.... 7a pistons with a 4a head will have a much lower compression ratio

i will probably opt for Wiseco pistons to fit GZE so the compression will hopefully be just below 9:1 with a 2mm HG

What about Fasteners?
ARP Head studs should work for the "G" head right and what about Main studs.. the main caps should be the same right?

I think the mains are the same, actually.....

you will want to go with studs on the rods....

if you have a dizzy on the 4age head, you will have to grind one of the ARP head studs to get the dizzy to fit.
