hey
I have a 4AF corolla 1990 and im thinking of taking all the parts that take air to the carb filter and just replace it with a mushroom filter that are usually for an injected engine.
will it work for a carb?
will it fit ontop of the carb?
will the bonnet shut?
and will i have to change the jetting to account for more air if there is any??
your thoughts would be awesome
cheers
You will be getting warm air from the engine compartment. But then if you have the snorkel tube removed (as about 99% of the cars that age do), that wont be any different than what you have now.
What could be a problem is the difference in air flow which might lean out your mixture.
If you are willing to play with jetting the carb, you might even get a power improvement, but if it is not done correctly, you could possibly loose performance.
There might not even be any difference in air flow, and then you won't have any problem.
The only way to know for sure, is dyno it before and then after you install the new filter.
You might be able to feel a difference by the seat of your pants, but that is not real scientific, and your perception can be clouded by the sweet sound of the induction roar at full throttle, which will probably be louder.

im still keen to try it and it gets rid of all that ugly plastic.
there will still be a snorkel that will bring cold air into the engine, since the top piece of the plastic that connects to the intake behind the light pulls out from there. if that made sense to anyone?? it's just an excuse to have some sort of induction sound lol
i have found a pic that i have gone into paint and circled the places where it there are attachments but im not good with trying to figure out how to put it with the typing .
Theres one more thing, if was to take all the intake off theres this really weird pipe coming from the manifold cover and into the intake can i take the manifold cover off to show the exhaust manifold??
That weird pipe is for cold days. You get warm air off the manifold to help atomize the fuel going into the engine until the engine warms up to operating temprerature.
This reduces the time it takes you to get reasonable throttle response without dumping gobs of fuel in to make the thing run.
If you are in a warm climate it only helps a little bit, just for a short time. It also helps with emissions by reducing the amount of fuel needed to run a cold engine, and the amount of unburnt fuel leaving the tail pipe.
I hope I explained it well enough, does that make sence to you?
Dam!! I really don't miss carbs. Thank god for fuel injection.
Anyway, it should sound really nice. I just hope it works for you.

so i shouldn't take the manifold cover off so if i did take it off it would run really rough
but my engine heats up pretty quickly but im just not sure.
i might just go and source some stuff and see if it will work and what not then get back to you
oh and that made sense once i read it twice lol im hoping i won't have to do anything else like the jetting hopefully toyota made a different carb in new zealand that compensates for more air that would be awesome

The car won't run rough if you take it off, and many of the cars I have seen over here with carbs have at least the hose missing, and run fine.
Like I said it helps in cold areas to shorten the time it takes for the engine to start responding satisfactorily to throttle imput. Think of it as a part of the choke system.
