Hey guys. Im new here so please be a little tolerant. Its a 1990 AE95 wagon XL with manual gearbox.
Ive searched high and low for a wealth of information about my car. First of all, it has a 4A-F carb in it - while all the information ive found about it relates to a 4A-FE, mines just the plainer one. Dunno if thats my problem, the fact that i live in New Zealand and its New Zealand new.
Now i only get 400km out of a full 50 litres. which relates to 8km/litre. Which isn't much. Anybody can ask me why this is like this - im sure its not the 4WD? Is that bad compared to a 4A-GE or FE?
Also: what is the top speed anybody here has gotten with a AE95? mine is 170kmh.
Another question. What would the easiest way to make it rear wheel drive be? I want to make it more fuel efficiant and powerful.
One more question: Is a warm idle speed of exactly 1000rpm be high for this engine? My friends 4A-FE is around 800rpm.
Thanks for answering my questions - hope to be an active member of this site.

DG.
8 km/L is pretty terrible, I would expect you to get more around 12-13. what kind of driving are you doing?
and yes, at least all the US alltracs had the 4a-fe, but new zealand engines are probably different.
usually idle is around 7-800, your carb probably has in idle speed screw you can turn to get it lower.
before you do that though, clean your carb out really well with some carb cleaner, it'll probably help your idle and gas mileage a bit.
as far as making it rear wheel drive, I really have no idea, I'm pretty sure you can't. the engine is transversely mounted.

I get about the same equivalent mileage as you do in my alltrac (1990 sr5 wagon, in the US) with fuel injection. 250 miles on about 12 gallons ~20mpg, worst was 18 and best was almost 27mpg. Top speed Ive probably put it to is about 95 mph. I think the poor mileage is from the extra weight from the 4wd system, being a wagon, and a bit underpowered.
So a quick RWD wouldnt be to just take the front CVs out from the gearbox or whatever then locking the center dif with the button?
Milage isn't so hot is it. Now at 100kmh/65mph its sittting at 3000rpm. is that about right?
Also - i heard the gearboxes are the same as celica gtfours?
NO NO NO
first its a bad idea,. because the manual locking is like a mechanical LSD, with the difference being YOU controlling it
thats the best way for getting something in the transmission broken
3000 RPM, sound about right
and the transmission IS NOT the same as the celica GT-Four transmission
they are in the same series (the E series) but theyre not the same model, as the corolla AWD have smaller engines, as such theyre made to withstand a power thats it WELL under what a 3S-GTE can produce
and for the screw on the carb, just take a screwdriver ¬_¬

I'm pretty sure the AE95 ALLTRAC wagons only came with the 4AFE... if it's got a 4AF it's most likely an AE92 FWD wagon, but different countries get different models for some reason.

Mines definatly a AE95. from the 4wd to everything else. yet it says 4AF when i pop the hood. would the F get worse milage then the FE?
