How to tell a failing gearbox?

Hey guys. How do you tell if a gearbox is getting worn in these cars?

The manual 5 speed gearbox (type: C50 or C52) has a know problem of having a twitchy 5th when they get older. 5th gear will eventualy keep popping out

A tell tale sign of worn synchro's is when shifting is getting harder and not as smooth as it use to. Most common with 1st and 2nd gear.
And look at the shifter when you really hit the gas. If it's slightly moving it's a sign of wear aswell

Hmmm, I've had a twitchy 5th gear for 5 years, 60,000km over those 5 years (350,000 total) and she still seems good. Knock on wood?

Than considder yourself lucky
Off course I'm not saying that it's the case with every C50/C52. But they are known for it and it occurs a lot.

I've had 2 C52's that kept popping out eventualy. You can still drive with them. But it isn't very pleasant to drive on the highway holding the stick in 5th all the time

The problem is in the bearing on the rear of the axle that has the 5th gear on it. Toyota knows of the problem and when you buy new parts, you get some new, more beefed up parts.
It completely rebuilt the C52 on my projectcar so I won't have to deal with that problem any more
