4A-F to 4A-GE

Forgive me if I didn't research well enough but I'd like some clarification on a couple issues. I drive a 1988 Toyota 4A-F, 3-speed automatic, 4 door Corolla. I've seen 4A-GE with 5-speed manual transmission combos on ebay for about $1000. Comes with wiring harness, ECU and a few other things. Changing from carbureted to EFI seems to require more. Do I need a new gas tank also?

Silver Tops and Black Tops were not available for this model in California. Can I still do the swap? Will it pass smog? I think i need to install smog emission stuff.

If all is good, and I get the combo... can i install the new transmission to the 4A-F and later drop in the 4AGE? Would I need a 4A-F ECU with MT?

Thanks for the feedback.

For a 4AF Automatic to 5SPD swap, no, the ECU can be left alone. Besides having to change the flywheel, install the clutch and pressure plate, all shift linkages, clutch cylinder, clutch pedal, and the 5spd trans itself, the only thing you have to do is jump the neutral safety switch wire that way your car can start. The trans on 4age should work on 4af/4afe since it's all the same block and stuff. The ratios may be different. I plucked my 5spd from another 4af corolla, so I knew for sure it would work.

If you plan on changing the motor out as well, I suggest (in my own opinion) doing it all one time since it will be easier a bit... if you can.

To swap a carb motor to a fuel injected motor (ie the 4ages'), you'll need to replace the gas lines and maybe the gas tank and install the fuel pump that goes in the tank for efi. Gas stuff can come from an EFI/ 4afe corolla. Other than that, the wiring harness and ecu from wherever you're getting your motor.

I'm not too sure if the silver or black would pass CA emissions. But I don't see why it wouldn't if everything is done right.

Transmission First, Engine Second.

Thanks for the feedback.

I plan on getting the 4A-GE engine+transmission combo. I found sources other than ebay. I want to swap out the transmission first while I prepare the the engine swap. I think it will be a C50 5-speed manual transmission...?

Can anyone see any problems I might encounter by doing this? My thoughts were that I can begin playing with the stick shift until the 4A-F blows out... if it does. It also buys my time so save up for a EFI gas tank and other accessories needed for the engine swap.

Thanks again.
