AE92 Toyota Engine Check Lights

I have the ECU codes and my friend that works on mr2's was saying i need to find the little grey box in the passenger side engine bay and could find anything.

was he wrong? i swore i need to get the code straight from the ecu, not from some box in the engine bay.

also here is the problem i am having.
say i have 3 errands to go do.
-pepboys
-target store
-best buy
if i go to each store and am there for around 15-20 minutes picking items up. every single time i start the car, it takes more and more cranks before it starts up. and the motion of cranks is very quick and smooth, nothing wrong with the cranks. it just takes more and more everytime. what do u guys think?

wanted to compress all that in one thread to keep the spam down.

The grey box is on drivers side by strut tower. You bridge two contacts in box (TE1 and E1 I think) but check tune up sticker to confirm and turn igintion key to on position and count flashes to get codes.
