How do you indentify trasmissions?

I have a 1991 SR5, The axle seal went out on the highway and I ran it out of fluid without knowing it and blew the transmission. It shuddered, then drove fine for a few miles and then just stopped and would hardly move, it was like every gear was gone so i think the differential may have went out. I got a used trans from a salvage yard that was supposed to have been out of the same kind of car but it seems geared differently and it seems a lot slower now. Before I could race my friends 91 CRX Si and I could pull about a car length on him through a 1/4 of a mile, now he can take me by around 3 car lengths easily.

I'm wondering if my old transmission was different than this one. I still have it and nothing went through the case so maybe I can even rebuild it.

How do you tell which type of transmission I might have in my car now and which one I have in my garage?

What are the codes of possible transmissions?

Does anyone know where I can get a gear ratio chart for the different transmissions?

Thanks!

SR5s and sedans have C50s. GTSs have C52s.

the GTS transmission's gears are a lot shorter, so it's possible your car used to have a C52 somehow (previous owner swapped it in?) and now you have the stock C50 longer ratio transmission again... are your revs very different on the highway?

I'm not sure if there is anywhere on the transmission where it says what it is. check around the bell housing? for some reason I remember reading that it might be there.

I bought the car from a salvage auction so I don't know any of the history of it. When I bought it it had 2.25" exhaust, a flowmaster muffler, and a k&n filter. Who knows, maybe it did have a different transmission in it.

I'll look and see if i can see it near the bell housing. One would think there would be some way to tell.
