The motor is a 4ac and there really aint much that can be done to it, not a whole lot of aftermarket parts out there, there is a fourm with a bunch of people that have that engine and mod it, It's 4ac-powered.forumotion.com. and about the carb a new carb for that thing is expensive a weber is cheaper I'd just get it rebuilt a local shop or do it yourself if you can. Oh and thats a 5th gen corolla not a sixth or a AE82 the first year of FWD.

a friend of mine is currently working on his 4ac carb and is hoping to beat or match webers flow rates.... we'll have to see how that goes. but yeah that sits on the ae82 platform, or the 5th gen FWD chassis. the years were offset just a bit, the AE92 style nova/prism started in 89 compared to 88 like the actual toyota version.

good intake and exhaust will net you maybe a few hp but not much you'll feel sadly. carb upgrade is probably your best bet but even that still not going to get you very far on that engine. if not happy, then your other option would be a swap but that can get fairly extensive

Your car is probably similar to the AE82. Not that us here in the 6th Gen area aren't all knowledgable, but perhaps you might find more help in the "older generations" section of the corolla.

4alc is just front wheel drive which is what the L means. A nova is a Ae82 it's just like the geo prizim and the ae92 and ae102

AE82 is the model code.
Look on the firewall of the engine compartment, and you will see the VIN numbers stamped into it. It should start with AE82, "A" being the engine code (4A engine), "E" body (Corolla), and the "82" for the edition (5th generation).

In some other countries the Corollas also use an "E" engine so those would be an EE82, EE86, EE92, etc, etc.

it's actually not the VIN number.

it's just a chassis code or a serial number or something. My VIN actually says AE95, but on my firewall there is a different code that starts with AE92.
