AE92 1988 Corolla DX Project

Hi TN,

I've been a car enthusiast all my life but never actually did anything about it... except maybe play driving games on my PS3,2,1... Atari. Recently, I've really wanted to do something, so I decided to paint the interior of my 1988 Corolla Sedan. It came with brown interior and I felt like livening it up. I went down to the local auto store and got some Dupli-Color spray paint.

Here are some pics of the before and after disassembly.

Test Paint

I removed the interior and painted with a textured metallic paint. Bad idea? I don't know yet. I just picked one. Seeing as I don't know dung about what I'm doing, I'm surprised I haven't run into any problems. Here are some test runs.

The next thing you need to do, is find a local sports car club that runs autocross and join up.
My PS2/GT4 are missing me now. It'S so much more of a rush in real life.

Speedometer Cluster Swap

I got a hold of a LE speedometer cluster with tachometer to swap into my Corolla. It has 179K miles on it. Mine has 178K... at almost 200K, less than 1K offset will not bother me. I thought about saving the swap for exact milage, but that could be well into next year.

More pics:

1000 miles is quite insignificant. I wouldn't worry about that. Go ahead and swap it now. The tach will be a cool and practical upgrade.

More Paint, More Assembly

I found some black vinyl/fabric paint for the rear speaker board.

Mostly Done

So I've run into some issues lol. During the reassembly, the paint got scuffed. It's not as durable as I may have assumed. But it's also nothing a little touch up can't repair. The doors and floor are next on my "TO DO" list. Eventually tinted windows, new steering wheel and front seats and seat belts. Black exterior? Ultimately (hopefully within a years time) 4A-GE 20V Black Top swap with MT.

So it's been a year now...

Hi TN,

It's been over a year now and my interior paint is holding up great.

My Corolla was vandalized about a month ago. You see that CD player in the early pics. I had that installed for my birthday gift to myself two years ago. I ask them to install the most budget one available. Anyway, some idiot thought they could make a couple bucks off of it, which I highly doubt. They broke my rear passenger quarter window to get in. Then ripped up my dash and snatched up that PoS stereo, which had already begun to occasionally malfunction. (btw, he left his tool in my car, so I filed a police report...I don't expect anything though.)

I was pissed about the stereo, but so much more about the window I needed to replace, all the broken glass I had to clean up, and my wrecked dash assembly. What did all this add up to? Well, it's junk yard time. (I was recently introduced to some local yards by friends. OMG CANDYLAND!)

I went on a 50% off day, got the glass, got the dash pieces w/clock, a passenger side mirror (mine never came with one). Found a GT-S and picked up a front strut tower bar and front sway bar, all for about 50-60 bucks.

Reassembly was cake. I installed the strut bar. Had to remove the wipers and the panel to get access to the other side of the firewall. Then I had two holes drilled into the firewall. I think originally the factory bolts were self threaded. I used a nut on the other side just to be safe.

The driving experience went up a notch or three. Who would have thought that a little bar like that would make such a difference? Yeah, I'm a rookie.

As for the sway bar, it's back to the junk yard for a few additional pieces I didn't realize I needed. I plan to replace my entire suspension with the GT-S suspension and I'll get the brake package while i'm at it.
