oil light on

ok so my oil light started coming on and off today. it's usually on when im coming to a stop or am stopped when in gear. sometimes it'll go away when i put my car into neutral, sometimes it doesn't. most of the time ill put it into neutral (automatic transmission) and gas a little bit so the oil light will go away. does this mean that my engine is bad now? or does that mean i have to replace something? probably has to do with oil pressure but i am not sure.

have you checked the oil level???
it may just be low.
or it could be the OPSU or the oil pump.
but without checking the oil its hard to know anything

How does it run? Smooth and steady or rough and unpredictable? Does smoke come out the tail pipe? Are there any noises coming from the engine that sound out of the ordinary?
OPSU= oil pressure sending unit, the wires can corrode or get damaged and sometimes they just stop working propperly. They are generally fairly cheap and easy to change. I would start there. The oil pump is a PIA and isn't usually cheap to have done at a shop. Check out how much the sending unit is locally and if its cheap enough for you start there. Which line on the dipstick he high line or the low line? Could just be low. Good luck.

the car runs super smooth. even at 80mph it's smooth. when im stopped at a stop light for like a few minutes, it'll vibrate like it's gonna die. i dont want it to die in a busy intersection so ill put it into neutral and rev until i get to go. the oil is right at where it should be. there aren't any noises that are weird or out of the ordinary. though when i first bought it there were a little oil in the spark plugs. cleaned that up and haven't seen any since. ill check into that bro. thanks!

AE92

Could it be a vacuum leak that's causing your idle to be too low? Check that...

Oil in the spark plug holes mean that the valve cover/ spark plug hole rubber gaskets are dried/ cracked which needs to be replaced. But since you said you cleaned it and never came back, it could've been just road grime and shit.

I would say it's likely your oil pressure sensor and/ or associated wires corroded.

Get your idle speed set. If it idles like it is going to die, the oil light comes on, and you need to put it in neutral.................Idle speed too low.

How do you set the idle speed? Where is the screw to adjust it? Can this be done on a efi car?

I would suspect a leaky oil pressure sending unit . Also what weight of oil are you using? Could try a 10w30 to see if helps. Here is a link on idle speed adjust for fuel injected engine. Look at Figure 19.

im using 5w30. i need to get a tach so i can tell whether or not my rpm is high or not. sometimes i feel it's high and sometimes it's low (not to the point of it dying though).

since you have no tach how do you know its idling low?? maybe the vibration is just the rad fan kicking on at a stop.

i've gone through several corollas and a couple le models of the 6th gen corollas. the previous ones i owned were in at 700-800rpm. this one sounds just super high. even my auto mechanicl bro in law says so ill find a way to get a tach so i can check everything.

btw, is it bad when im stopped and the oil light flashes? when it does that the car feels like it's gonna die
