auto trans won't shift

1990 Corolla with automatic. I'm thinking about buying this car, but the transmission won't shift. It just stays in low gear. I'm looking for someone who has had this problem and figured out what it was. Please don't respond with " I had that problem and the transmission needed rebuilding" or replies with possible fixes that you have never tried yourself. I'm looking for a specific cause of the problem and a fix that worked for you.

Check to see that the linkage is in fact moving on the trans side, if all is good there make sure the car is coming up to temperature as it won't shift from secdond untill its warm. Usual problem in this case would be a thermostat stuck open.

Doesn't shift at all? I lost a shift solenoid and really had to run it up before it would shift. And it skipped 2nd. But I can't say that's your problem.
