just got a prizm, i need some help

the car is a 90 it's a 16v.
when you start the car, no throttle, the car will start fine, as soon as you jump on the gas, it bogs to the point of dying, it will restart fine. here's what's throwing me off though, SOMETIMES the car will start fine, and drive fine, ie. throttle is responsive the car shifts fine and will move under it's own power. but shortly after it will die again as soon as you touch the throttle. the guy i bought it from said it's gotta be a wiring issue, i don't think it is, when it does bog and die you can smell fuel.

things that have already been replaced
plugs/wires/fuel filter.

Also, if the car has been sitting for a long time, the fuel in it could have gone bad. If it has been sitting for a while, I would fill up with fresh gas and see if that helps.

I agree on checking throttle positioner sensor and wiring. Here is a link on retrieving check engine light codes and what they mean. Alot of times a code is stored in memory but doesn't trigger light. Also check timing and vac hoses for leaks.

update++++++++

i was messing around today with the car. i figured out that it can be driven, everytime. it's not intermittent like i thought earlier. it can be driven if the accelerator is BARELY pushed. and i mean barely. just off idle in neutral, or in drive/reverse it will accelerate {eventually} and get up to speed. but as soon as you give it even 5% throttle, everytime, it will bog down. messed with the timing, by moving the distributor, it only idles right when it's all the way towards the firewall, any other spot and it stutters at idle.

You need a volt/ohm meter to check out the throttle position sensor. If you have one check out the link (page 12 figure 18)
