Just curious if anyone has removed the resonator on their exhaust? While under the car today, I noticed it had one. Would like a little extra wang out of the exhaust but nothing loud.

Not looking for horsepower, just a little sound (not much more). This thing is too quiet for me. I guess it's from all the years of driving my Z28 which has headers, no cat, Magnaflow, etc.

if you're going to weld it yourself then it would be worth it just to see what it would sound like.
i don't think it will give you any pleasing exhaust noise though. you will probably just end up with something a bit raspy and "piece of shit car" sounding.

I removed mine. Didn't get any louder, just a bit lower bass sounding. I like it. Not ricey sounding at all.
I have no resonator, thanks to rusts for cutting it off for me. And also for the natural cut on the muffler, too. The only thing that's there is pipes and the cat.
IT SOUNDS NICE! And it's not loud or sound indecent at all as if you had a hole in the pipe somewhere...
I had it out with a 4A-FE and it sounded ok. (header 2" pipe from cat back)
I had it out with the 4A-GE, sounded horrible, gave a bubbling tinny sound. (header, 2.25" pipe, cat and muffler)
I had the resonator put back in and it sounded good afterwards.

Mind you this is with the OEM 1.75 inch piping, so it might even sound better... I'm actually considering this now.

You are quite right. I was really surprised with the difference between the two engines.

Well I'll throw in my two cents but it's not the solution you're looking for.
I have a AE92 with a 4A-FE and I had my exhaust system redone. The honeycomb in my cat had a brick of carbon in it so I now have a high flow cat, stock piping (it is a grade of stainless after all), Thrush glass pack, tip. When I first had it done it sounded really ricy so the next day I had an aftermarket resonator put on. The factory resonator was idk ~2-2.5inn diameter and was pretty much straight through. The one put on was a lot thicker and has some interesting "swirl" effect going on in it.
Now it sounds absolutely SOLID. The $47 for the resonator was a good investment. If you want I can make a little vid of the sound but I think it would be good to keep it on. Especially if you're planning on doing aftermarket exhaust. I can't possible imagine how it would sound just cut off at the cat.
