Im getting ready to upgrade the engine in my corolla from the 4AF to a 4AG-E 20v blacktop and I wanted to know if a naturally-aspirated engine is able to be upgraded to a turbo or should I just go with the 4AGZE and do a turbo converstion with a stage 2 setup
The GZE is obviously (if you had done any search, google, etc) the winner if you want to turbocharge as it already has better internals. However 20V's have been turbocharged before without problems.
ok, thanks so the GZE is my better option and the 20vs can be tubrocharged, good to know incase I cant find a good GZE
PhatRoyale- I want a stage 2 setup for the simple fact that it can easyly dish out 500hp+ and I just want a beefed up street car with a plan of taking it to shows mostlikly not racing it
Ren69- a stage 2 setup is things like forged rods/pistons/crank/cams an upgraded fly wheel C/V axles Clutch upgrades added Items to handle higher amounts of hp so that a rod doesnt snap like a twig or the head doesnt fly through the hood or anyother bad things like that
Your best bet would be the Silvertop 20... 4AGZE's are becoming too difficult to find, thus finding one would mean expect to pay $1400 or more. Silvertop 20's are around $850 to $1000 (trans, ecu, uncut harness, all accessories incl.).
They do have forged pistons, conrods, and many other good stuff for the 20V 4age's so no problem there for what you're looking for. I'm heading down that road, too.
Some makers have Stage1,2,3,etc to mark their products in order like stage1 only does slight changes to fuel map, etc. BSR-chip does have that labeling IIRC... otherwise its got no real world meaning.

Better choose a better platform than a corolla for that horsepower amount if you want to easily dish it out.
Yes I know that in realistic terms stages 1-X really has no meaning, just that my friends and I have figured out the "stages" in which certin parts need to be upgraded to reach higher amounts of hp without damaging the engine or car. I dont plan on having a 500+hp engine just the fact that it will be outfited with the right parts to hit those amounts of power I dont want more then 350hp and no faster then a 12sec car other wise it needs a roll cage and lots of other frame/body enhancments
I swear people are just so critical when others say things that they them selfs find dumb just because they cant think outside the box.....

I don't understand how you expect us to know what it means if it's just between you and your friends.
I'm also not sure what use it is if stage 2 is 500 whp... doens't seem like it has much resolution to it.
I agree with flashmn... with 350 hp and the amount you'll spend getting there... you're much much better off with a different platform. mainly something not front wheel drive...

When you've worked on cars for 10 years, lame terms like stage 1 etc drop out of the vocabulary.
Even 350hp is going to require a great deal of money and isnt _Easy_ to achieve on a 4A-XX engine... better just get something with more balls to begin with if you want it to be easy. 12 seconds isnt easy either... My friend has an RWD nissan with 500hp and it runs 12's.
Eage8, I'm not saying he should go with something else, I'm just saying he's into more work and spenditures than he realizes.
Why stage 3? why not 4 or 5? you'd be pushing 999hp and hitting 250mph around the High speed ring.
On the serious side, reaching 150hp on an NA 16V is hard enough as it is, 250hp on a GZE is probably not too far off but definitely not as hard as you think.
Here's the mod stages simplyfied.
Stage 1: $3500-5000
Stage 2: $5000-7500
Stage 3: $7500-10,000
Stage 4: $10-20,000
Bonus Stage! $50,000 for a full atlantic 4AGE swap and 1 rebuild after your first track day.
