Quick Q about 4afe engine

I'm replacing the cylinder head of my 1991 Corolla LE.

I've found a cheap cylinderhead that was reconditioned but never used.. however, it is from a 1990 Corolla Sr5.

Q: Do these models have the same engine/cylinder head?

Coz if it was, I'd be saving so much time and money.

I need an answer asap before I go ahead and get the part

as long it was from a sr-5 with a 4afe and not a 4af because correct me if Im wrong they are slightly different.

did you check that your head was actually warped or damaged? if not just re-use it when you replace the gasket. or rebuild it yourself its really not too hard.

Well the guy with the part said that he had a 4afe on his sr5.

But I don't really trust what he says too much... I'm just gonna go down there and take a look at it myself.

My mechanic says that if my gasket is gone and since I had so much oil and coolant mixed together, the head is probably cracked or warped. I'm basically gonna find out tomorrow afternoon once the head has been taken out and checked.

I don't know too much about reconditioning the head. Plus, I need the car right away so I don't even have the time to do it if I wanted to.

But I really need to know how if I can use the Cylinder Head from the sr5. It would be great if I could use it, coz it saves a lot of time.

Q: What's the difference between a 4af and a 4afe?

the af is carberated and the afe is fuel injected. sr5 or sedan shouldnt matter.
I seriously doubt the head is cracked or warped in all honesty.
I had a 93 civic with a very similar engine to the 4afe. I bought it with a totally destroyed head gasket. it was so bad that there was a thick cloud of smoke behind he car when driven that was so bad that you couldnt see anything at all behind you. I drove it this way for about a week because I was lazy and didnt feel like laying the car up all day.
changed the vc and head gasket after checking the head with a straight edge. everything was fine everything went smoothly and it ran like new after the change.
mechanics assume everything is wrong in case they have to bill you for it.

I guess you have a point

I kinda trust my mechanic. I think he's just trying to make sure that if the head WAS damaged, might as well get the part. He also said that in most cases, the head does get damaged, especially if the leak was really bad. I'll find out tomorrow anyhow.

When I had a chance to look at the inside of the engine though, it was really badddd.. It's like my engine was filled with 10L of frapuccino

How bad was the leak in your civic at that time? I have a hunch that it wasn't that bad coz You were able to drive it for 3 weeks with the leak.

I can't even drive 2 blocks without the engine overheating

I had to put more water in the rad at every stop and couldn't drive far. But good luck on your repair I'm sure all will be well once it's taken care of.

the sedan and the SR5 both switched over to a 4AFE in '90. '89 and older have 4AFs, '90 and newer have 4A-FEs.

that head is the same as yours.

I'd get the head checked, unless this other one is better than yours for sure. I drove around with a blown headgasket twice, the first time was for 6 - 7 months and the second was for 7 - 8 months. The second time was the worst because I was making 2 hour trips, 1 way (so 4 hours total), multiple times a week. It would over heat on the hwy when you hit a hill. But even then my engine seems unhurt.Could be because I beat the piss out of it which keeps the oil pressure up, which causes the oil to go into the antifreeze rather than the other way around.

Update!!

So I took the head to my mechanic yesterday..

I got a call 15 mins ago, my mechanic told me that the cylinder head I gave him doesn't have places to put the fuel injectors in T_T

So does that mean that it was from a 4af carb engine??

Where abouts do the fuel injectors go in anyway??

I could be wrong, but I thought they plugged into the intake manifold on a 4afe

depending on the year of your car, your head might have the injector fittings directly on the head, rather than in the intake manifold (my 89 All-Trac is this way).

if this is the case, you will need to install the correct intake manifold as well (assuming your original head is actually toast)
