I'll be rebuilding the starter with parts from clickerfixer on Ebay. Most failures are just the contacts and plunger in the solenoid. $25 beats $70 for a new starter!

On the 4A-FE, I would suggest putting it up on ramps and getting it from below.
The support bar for the intake manifold bight need to come out, (can't remember for sure) but that only has two bolts.
On the 4A-GE I had to pull the exhaust manifold to get mine out.
If anybody needs a 4A-GE starter I have new one that was only on for less than a week before my crank broke. Make me a reasonable offer.

It'll go up on the rhino ramps for sure. I need to pull all the airbox and piping off anyways. I need to get at the throttle body real good to clean it.

What? I pulled mines out from the hole inbetween the exhaust manifold and the transmission. I don't remember if I unbolted the slave cylinder or not but it's easy if so. My starter was even wrapped in a heat blanket too.

Maybe because I had on an OBX headder.

I just finished putting a clutch in my coupe (PITA) by the way! 4afe starter comes out the bottom. Upper starter bolt is accessed from the top (remove air filter box). Bottom bolt from underneath. Disconnect battery and remove starter wires first! I didn't actully remove mine, just hung it on top of the shift cables. That manifold support bracket might get in the way.
