GTS Stock rear strut dimension

Hi All,

Anyone still running or have sitting around the OEM rear struts from a GTS?

I need to know what the OUTSIDE dimension/diameter of the strut housing is. I'm hoping it's right at 51mm.

On that note, assuming it's 51mm, anyone in the SF bay area have some blown out rear struts they want to sell for cheap?

Thanks!

Alan

I believe the set that I have is OEM, but not totally sure. That said, the set that I have is 48.6mm OD. What did you want to do? Put some Konis in?

Thanks for taking the time to measure it.

Any tell tale clues that it might be OEM? Usually there is a Toyota P/N stamped in there somewhere on the body.

I'm trying to see if I can frankenstein some rear housings to use a set of double adjustable konis. With the spring rates I'm planning on running, the Koni sports meant for the OEM housings will be trashed in no time, and the double adjustable inserts require a gland nut to hold it in place, just like the OEM front setup.

Thanks,

Alan

Ok, I wiped away some dirt and found "Toyota" so I'm pretty sure they are OEM. Alas they are not the 51mm you were hoping for. Do you still want them?

There was some website of a guy somewhere in northern europe (netherlands maybe) who cut open some rear struts and his Konis used a bolt on the bottom thus not requiring the nut to hold them in like the fronts. I thought that was interesting. Perhaps you can do that?

Oh man, I was just looking at pics on your website and guess what I saw.... MY CAR!!! Well, i wasn't my car then but it is now. I bought your buddy Ben's white GTS. I do remember he told me it was autocrossed. Dang, what a small world.

Wow....it IS a small world. IIRC, your/Ben's GTS was pretty clean...but then again, I haven't seen the car in about 8 years!

I wish it were as simple as cutting the tops off and bolting it in from the bottom. The Koni double adjustables have one adjustment on top, and the other on the bottom (I forget which is which). You need to drill a hole in the bottom so you can insert a screwdriver to adjust one of the settings. On the single adjustable Koni's, you're right...the hole on the bottom is used to bolt the insert down.

How much would you like for the struts? I still might be interested in them...depending on the price. If the inside diameter worsks for my needs, I might still be able to use 'em.

Thanks,

Alan

Yup, it's even in the manual that should have been included with you're KONI's

(And as you can see...yes, it was the Netherlands )

There is a discription on my website: http://www.corollaae92gts.nl
but I don't have that page translated yet.

But there are a few pictures of the process in the photoalbum on the site aswell

Shame I read this just now...I just threw away some old, opened up struts last week!

Ah ok, I knew someone here would know that website (or actually be the author). I guess it's all moot now tho because like azee said, he's going for the double adj. so I guess he'll need to weld on a strut top from a strut with threads or something.

Azee, do you have any parts to trade? I'm looking for coilover helper/tender springs and couplers. If not, I'd probably ask for $20? I dunno, I have no idea.

Sorry, I don't have any tender springs/couplers in my stash-o-parts.

Lemme think about the rear struts. I'm gonna have to do some wrecking yard diving to measure different housings to see if there's anything compatible. I've heard Celica housings might work, but I'm not positive. My DA's up front *barely* cleared the inside diameter of the stock GTS housings, so I'm a little iffy that the rears will work since it's already 2.4mm smaller than the fronts.

Thanks again.

Alan

Ok, just LMK if you ever want them. Doubt anyone else does.

Sucks that Pick your Part went out of business. At least we still have PickN Pull.

I would be all over them if I didn't already have a set sitting in my closet waiting for koni yellows :-P

considering they're the only way to get decent dampers in the rear (excluding coilovers) I imagine quite a few people would be interested...

SuperRA - doing some more checking around at the specific size requirements (inside diameter, specifically) i need for the koni inserts, and there's a good chance I *may* still need your housings. I should have confirmation in the next few days, so I'd appreciate it if you could hold onto them for me for now!

Also, I was diggin' through some photos and found a few pictures of your gts at a few autox events. i'd be happy to email them to you if you are interested. Lemme know!

They aren't going anywhere anytime soon... Do what you need to do, take your time. (because if you do take them, I'll have to take off the springs. Of which I am procrastinating..)

I'd very much appreciate some pics. It's cool to see what kind of life my car had before me. I wouldn't mind some pics of your sedan accidentally getting mixed in either it might inspire me on the GTS-izing of my sedan.

Thanks alot man. I'm still uncertain if they'll work, but it's worth a shot. You're in SJ, right? Ever make it up towards SF/Oakland area? I've got a compressor that I can buzz those springs off in a few seconds. Let's try to set something up (I can head down there, meet halfway, whatever) to avoid shipping costs.

PM me your email addie and I'll send those pictures I found to you. I'll dig up some shot of my sedan, but she's still a work in progress!
