On a manual gearbox, the reverse light switch is on the top of the housing.

On the manual 5-speed C52 gearbox it's, like Donald already said, on top of the gearbox.
It's the thing with the wire coming out of it

Nope, not hard....You should be able to reach it in the enginecompartment. Just screw it out and screw an new/other one in, plug it in and voila...another cause you can tick off the list

I do believe there is a copper ring onder there, not quite sure, but you'll see that soon enough...but if you're lucky you can use the old one again

The only difficulty is that you cannot get a socket on to it because of the wire, and you might have a clearance problem with a wrench. You will probably need to take your airbox and stuff like that out to get in there

You might want to jump across the plug (end of it attached to the car) and see if the lights come on. That would verify a bad switch before you remove it.

Just take a paper clip or something similar and jump across the pins of the plug (after unplugging it from the wire going to the transaxle switch). Turn on the key, and your backup lights should be on. If they are, it's the switch, if not, gotta look somewhere else............
