Ok my first question...engine cranks but wont start
I drive the toyota corolla 16GL 1991 model
I had a problem where the fan comes on when i switch the car on and wont go off
So i thought the tempreture sensor was faulty (the one on the termostat housing)
i replaced that ,but i think the wire that plugs into that must have toutched the enging
(my guess is the wire is + and the engine - )
Now the starter turns but the car doesnt want to start (i cant see if it recieves a spark) what i noticed is that the battery light on the console doesnt come on anymore.
Now i thought there must be a fuse blown somewhere.i checked the fuses at the drivers footwell, i checked the fuses in the engine bay,i checked the fuses on the battery terminal they are all fine, i then replaced the starter relay. Now i am stuck....i dont know where else to look for the problem.
First thing is to make sure you do have spark. Try holding a spark plug wire about 1/4" from the valve cover and have someone crank the engine. If you're getting spark, it will arc from the end of the wire to the valve cover.
I'd be worried that the ECU was fried. That would meet all the symptoms, including the battery light not coming on. When you turn the key, does the Check Engine Light ever come on?
The Check Engine Light (CEL -- you'll see this abbreviation quite a bit) looks like a little picture of an engine and will briefly light up when you turn the car on (this is to let you know that it's working -- not indicating any problems).
Some carbed AE92s have CELs (mine, for instance.) It might only be on California cars though.
Here's an example... they all look relatively similar:
Hopefully it's not a dead ECU but that's looking like the most likely culprit now.

The fan running whenever the ignition is on usually indicates that:
(1)the temp switch is bad, (you eliminated that one)
(2)the temp switch wire is broken
(3)the air conditioner high/low pressure switch is bad
(4)the air conditioner reridgerant pressure is so low that the system won't work
(5)the air conditioner high/low switch wire is broken
If the temp switch wire touches the engine it should not affect anything but the fan.
The temp switch grounds the wire to the engine when it is cold, and opens when it is hot. So that wire is normally grounding to keep the fan from running.

Modification: Changing something to what you thought it should have been from the start!
Exactly. A failed fan relay would cause the fan to run all the time, as the relay must be energised, that is, grounded thru the temp switch and a/c press switch, to keep the fan OFF. Sort of a fail-safe system I guess.
okkk the car doesnt have aircon,Ghostyman i cant see the pic (only a red x)
i checked the timeing belt and that is still ok,i still need to check for spark ,but i live alone so i will have to wait for someone to crank the starter for me....o and my car has a carburator
90GP do u mean the two fuses on the positive terminal? if so i did check them and they are fine
Just out of curiosity, all i did was change the temp sitch/sensor and after the the car didnt want to start, how can the ecu fail? or is it waer and tear? man i cant fidure this one out...
Have you tried spraying starting fluid in the carb to verify whether or not it's a fuel issue? How old is the distributor cap/rotor and wires? I don't think your temp sensor replacement is the cause just a coincidence.
Make double sure you haven't blown the 10 amp IGN fuse located in the driver's kick panel fuse block. This fuse feeds the charge warning light, which you said doesn't work now. I don't have a wiring diagram for carbureted model, but that fuse may also feed to the distributor.
I am working this weekend (dayshift- 12hour shift)
So i will go double check the fuses on monday
the car has an electronic distrebuter so i dont think anything would have gone wrong with that, but i will check that out aswell, just to be sure,i will also spray some stater fluid into the carb to see if that would work. thanks for all the help so far
this i a great site, especially for people like me who wants to fix thier own cars and in the proccess learn how your car works
