1990 2dr SR5 transmission question

Hello, I am looking for a transmission for my 1990 2dr SR5 1.6L 4AFE corolla automatic. It has the 4 speed automatic. And I was wondering what years of cars (corolla, camry) transmissions will swap. And if you know the trans code that would be great!

Thanks

Simply...

1988 - 1992 Toyota Corolla, except ALLTRAC.

5 Spd Manuals are all the same from '88 - '92.

3 Spd Automatics are in most base version sedans (non-DLX, non-LE).

4 Spd Automatics are in most LE/DLX version sedans and SR5/GTS.

Pretty much, any transmission from a 4AF, 4AFE, or 4AGE will bolt up and work with what you have. I think the 3spd autos code are A101L. Not sure of the others.

GT-Ss had C52s with different gear ratios. Everything else had C50s

it's actually more in depth than that.....

c50's were in the early corolla's and mr2's... in 87 the c52 made it's debut in the fx16 and the mr2's.... 88-91 in the ae92 gts's and mr2s, 90-91 in the prizm gsi's and ae92 gts's and then in the 93-97 7afe corollas.. but those used a different final gear ratio than the 4age c52's

I was going to mention that they were in MR2s also, but don't they have the clutch for on the opposite side? You can use them, but you need to get creative.

thought the starter location on the c52 caused fitment issues on the early 4af/e motors?

Best option for a sure fit and a nice change in the feel of the car would be a c50 off an ae92 sr5.

I think you can swap starter locations around front or back, as long as you use the appropriate black mounting plate.

I forgot the 5spd had two version.

Thanks, I don’t plan to do a swap to a 5 speed, way to much work and not enough pay off with this car. This coming weekend I will make a trip out at the yard and look for a rear ended LE/DLX/SR5 with the 4 speed. Really appreciate the help.

Thanks again!

actually the auto cars vs the 5-speed cars are apparently a fairly big difference. I know the auto car can't accelerate as quick as my car, nor seem to hit the same top speed (not that you EVER need to go that fast), regardless if it has a 4af like mine or the slightly more powerful 4afe. That and in rain or snow you really can't beat the added throttle control of a manual car.

I think this can be said for most auto vs stick apps, but this does depend on the driver, some people can't drive stick properly no matter how hard they try.
