rims have a diameter, width, offset, and lug pattern.

you can use pretty much any diameter you want within reason, I wouldn't ago above 16 though. I have 15s on mine and I think they're perfect, but it's all about personal preference.

7" wide is probably the most I would recommend, I think jmaz has 8" wide wheels, but I think he's having clearance issues too...

offset, you want something in the mid 30s. high 30s will probably work, I wouldn't touch anything in the 40s unless you want to get spacers.

the corollas lug pattern is 4x100

with tires, the size looks like this: 205/50R15

the first number is width, 205s is pretty much the most you can fit without having to roll the fenders.

second is sidewall height, but it's a ratio of the width... so it can be pretty tricky. for example: a 225/45/17 has the same sidewall height as a 255/40/17

I recommend this to find the right sidewall height:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

the last number is what diameter wheel you have.

using the 205/50r15 as an example, whats the unit of measurement for the side wall height and width. I know the15 is the rim size in inches.

width is more or less in mm, but every tire is different... if you want an exact measurement, it's usually on the tire manufacturers site.

the sidewall height has no unit, it's a ratio. theoretically it would be 50% of 205mm which is 102.5mm...

yeah, usually height is a percentage of the width of the tire.

As for what "size" can be used on your AE92, this has been discussed and beat a million times on the forum, a search could've gave you good results.

Stay away from rims with higher offset than 40mm and widths bigger than 7inch and you should be ok, for tires anything bigger than 205mm will most likely rub.

Examples:
If you're buying 15s, 15x6.5 or 15x7 wheels with 35-40mm offset and 195/50-15 or 205/50-15 tires will fit fine.

If you're buying 16s the pattern is the same, except tire sizes can be 205/40-16 or 205/45-16

These are the safer sizes to run, although you can go lower offset than 35 with higher width wheels, but if you don't combine them properly they will most likely rub on the outside against the fender, and will rub on the inside if you go with higher offset wheels.

The proper term is the aspect ratio.

I think the guy I bought my wagon from said the previous owner put Saturn 15" steelies on the wagon... and I think one of the original Toyota steelies is sitting in the spare tire well.

I tried one of my del Sol "fat fives" on the wagon when I was working on it a week or so ago, and it fit fine, though the hub didn't slide neatly into the rim (whatever that's called... hub-centric?). The fat fives are 4x100 and 14" rims.

That's because most 14s are usually 14x5, 5.5 or 6inch... you rarely will see 14x7 which is where the problems start to happen.

yeah. I had a set of acura LS meshes from a friend, they fit well up front, but with being such high offset, rubbed the strut in the back. IIRC they were 15x6.5 with ~45 offset.

I don't know much about rims and sizes, so it's been good to read up a bit here and keep searching online for more info. I just did a search since I was curious about my del Sol's rims:

Factory Si wheels (fat fives)
14x5.5, 4x100 bolt pattern, 35mm offset.

I'm thinking about buying my friend's set since he hates them so much, have them powdercoated black, and remove the Honda H decal from the center caps (and replace with Toyota Ts, or just the name, lol). Toyota fat fives!

I prefer VTEC style or Acura fat fives (pic) over my Si rims because mine have center caps. Plastic with an aluminum cover, which tends to get chewed up easily whenever you have to pop them off to remove a tire. But they would look nifty on my All-Trac with the Toyota T logo, hehe

So how about for offset, what is the lowest you can go without it looking like a roller skate, or rubbing to bad? I really like XXR 513 rims, but i think the highest offset the come in is 15. I have seen pictures of them on a toyota yaris, and scion xb so i would imagine it would fit. but just seeing if anyone knows for sure.

offset fitting the car will depend on the width of the wheels, you could probably get away with it IF they're 7inch wide... chances are they're 8inch though. I've seen people run 8inch widths with zero offset BUT you have to use smaller tires and stretch them on the wheel... like 15x8 with zero offset and 195/50-15 tires (or 45s).
