manual trans and clutch question

planning on replacing my manual transmission fluid and bleeding the clutch fluid on my '90 sr5. my question is, what kind of transmission fluid am i supposed to put back in and how many quarts? is there a filter for this transmission like an automatic ae101? as for the clutch fluid, where do i bleed it from? any writeups? ive bled clutch fluid and changed transmission fluid on my rwd s13 a number of times but never a fwd before. any advice is appreciated :] thanks!

AE92

Gear oil: 2.7 quarts of SAE 75W-90 or 80W-90, API GL4 or GL5. Or, simply fill the trans until fluid starts to come out from the filling hole. The drain plug is on the bottom, a big bolt maybe 19mm or 21mm I think, facing towards the driver side. The filling plug is almost halfway to the top on the front side of the trans facing the front of the car, I think also a 19mm or 21mm.

Manuals have no filters.

To bleed the clutch fluid, the bleeder valve is on the clutch slave cylinder which is mounted on the front-top of the transmission, to the right of the exhaust header. Assuming you already know how to bleed...

...when I did mine I found it a pain in the arse trying to get the lube into the trans without making a mess. If anyone has a good idea share it with lovely10 to spare the grief.

A funnel with maybe a 2 feet tube that can fit into the fill hole, that's what I used, minimal mess.

pull the speedometer drive unit and fill there.

the drive unit is bolted to the back of the transmission, and has a cable from the firewall (right in front of the driver) that leads into the transmission.... the cable is 2 pieces, but I recommend leaving the cable in place to use it as some leverage.... unbolt the 12mm bolt that holds the tab in place (which keeps the drive unit from rotating) and pull the speedometer drive unit out.... you will now have a 1.5" hole to fill the trans with.

I figured this one out in the aw11, as it's a bigger PITA than an ae92 to fill...

your engine will NOT look like this.... this is just for reference....

if you notice the white plug connector in the middle bottom of the photo (lying on the transmission) you will see a cirucular mechanical connector (ie it isn't electronic). In the photo, the 12mm bolt is just to the right (in the car it will be towards the passenger side of the car)

the auto parts store near me sells a 2 ft. tube that screws onto the bottle. It makes it really easy. you just put the tip of the tube in the whole and squeeze the hole bottle in. The only mess is when you get to the full line and you have 2 feet of tube that has gear oil in it still :P

I bought a pump that fits in a gallon jug, with a clear hose and barb gizmo so it won't fall out of the hole. It's a lifesaver. I think it's made by sta-lube.

Nice looking power package Toyotaspeed90!

I just was not smart enough with the hose thing on the bottle tip... the damn hose kept falling off the end of the bottle tip.

+1 on the pumps they kick butt. Harbor freight sells them for like 6$-8$. Worth every penny.
